What Steels do you use?
We use a variety of stainless steels in our knives including AUS-8, 420-J2 and 440A.
Knives produced from AUS-8: SwingBlade, Caper-Lite, Pocket-Lite, Pocket-Hook, Whitetail Skinner, Game Skinner, Hybrid Hook, Kodi-Caper, Kodi-Skinner, Trophy Skinner and Hybrid Hunter
Several of our top quality fixed blade knives are produced from AUS-8 stainless, a high carbon chrome-moly steel. We vacuum heat treat each blade to a Rockwell-C hardness of 57-58. AUS-8 is a premium steel that offers excellent edge retention, corrosion resistance and ease of sharpening.
Knives produced from 420-J2: Game Shears, Game Processor, Butcher-Pro, Wedge, Wedge II
Our butcher sets and Wedge knives are produced from 420-J2, a high performance, corrosion resistant stainless steel heat treated to 54-55 Rockwell-C. All our knives produced from 420-J2 are taper ground to a 0.3-0.4 mm for a thin, razor sharp edge that reduces cutting resistance.
Knives produced from 440-A: Fish & Bone
Our Fish & Bone is produced from 440-A stainless. 440-A offers excellent edge retention, flexibility, and corrosion resistance. The Fish & Bone is vacuum heat treated to 56-57 Rockwell-C hardness.
Our saws are produced from high carbon H2 tool steel. Each blade is vacuum heat treated and chrome coated for corrosion resistance.
How do you sharpen Outdoor Edge knives,
saws, gut and hooks?
All knives require sharpening after extended use. We recommend touching up your knives periodically instead of using them to the point when they become completely dull. Several quality sharpening devices are available from companies like Spyderco, Lansky, Gatco, DMT, Eze-Lap and Smith’s. Contact your local sporting goods store or mail order catalog for these items. For our fixed blades we recommend a sharpening angle of 40°or 20° per side. For axes we suggest a sharpening angle of 60-70° or 30-35° per side. Factory Sharpening Service
Outdoor Edge offers factory sharpening with every knife purchase. This service is for Outdoor Edge knives only. Send your knives by insured mail or UPS to our offices in Boulder with a check for $9.95 to cover return UPS postage. We will hone a shaving sharp factory edge on your knives, sharpen the gut hook and return them within 2-3 weeks. Be sure to include your name, return street address (No PO Boxes) and phone number.
Sharpening Gut Hooks.
Gut hooks can be sharpened using a round ceramic or round fine grit diamond. Unless you are very skilled in sharpening we recommend against sharpening the gut hook yourself. Outdoor Edge includes sharpening of the gut hook with our Factory Sharpening Service.

Are Outdoor Edge products “Lifetime Guaranteed”?
Each Outdoor Edge product is guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the original purchaser. Our knives are produced from stainless steel however “Stainless” does not mean "Rust Proof". All stainless steels will rust if not cared for. Rust is not covered by warranty. Sheaths are guaranteed to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the date of purchase. This warranty becomes void for any product that is abused or lost. Outdoor Edge knives are quality cutting tools and should be treated as such. Any use of an Outdoor Edge knife other than cutting is considered abuse. Warranty claims should be sent with original purchase receipt and a brief explanation of the defect to our offices in Boulder.

How do you care for Outdoor Edge knives?
Outdoor Edge produces quality products that must be properly cared for as you would your gun, bow or binoculars. All knives require sharpening after extended use. We recommend touching up your knives periodically instead of using them to the point when they become completely dull. After field use, wash each knife by hand using a soft cloth, warm water and liquid dish soap. Do not use steel wool or a scouring pad as it will scratch the blade finish. Note that “Stainless” does not mean "Rust Proof". All stainless steels will rust if not cared for and rust is not covered by warranty. Be sure to completely dry each knife before placing in a dry sheath. Storing knives in a wet sheath will cause the blades to rust. Treating the blade with a rust inhibitor such as Tuf-Cloth by Sentry Solutions will greatly reduce the chance of rust forming on the blade.
