Pros: Effectiveness, Overall Quality, Ease of Use
Great finishing stone for the price
When I saw how inexpensive these stones were, I went ahead and bought 4 to try out. Out of the package, 3 of the 4 felt level to the touch, while the fourth has an area in the center of the stone that was slightly raised (by the grind patterns, it looks like the middle just had a bit that didn't fully get covered by a pass or two). That fourth stone still works well, but it has been set aside for outdoor tools or smaller chisel blades. All of the stones are capable of putting a fine edge on a knife, to the point of getting a nice shine that it's a bit shy of a mirror polish. I have used both dry and with oil, and would say using oil is slightly easier just from a stone-cleaning perspective. On the backs of two of the stones, I glued on a strip from a leather belt, giving a good grip to the table while using the stone, and doubling as a strop for a quick finish. These stones are the same size as those used in the Smith's Trihone system, so I plan on taking off the coarse stone from that setup and gluing one of these in its place for convenience. Overall, great purchase, and would buy more without question if mine are damaged in the future.
