al mar eagle hd in ZDP 189
I purchased this knife from knifecenter.com, and as usual, their customer service was unimpeachable. I got it in 3 days, just as promised. There are some things I don't like about this knife, They are all things that are not really negative per se, but just contrary to my tastes. First of all, I prefer liner locks to lockbacks, but I'm sure I will get used to the change. I wish Al Mar would offer the option of a DLC coated blade, and different sizes. 4 inch blade is technically not legal to carry where I live.Like most lock backs it requires a fair amount of wrist action to open. I don't like that. Ergonomics of the thumb studs are very good, so that ameliorates the issue. Still, this knife is slow to open compared with other systems. On the plus side it is not likely to come open by accident in your pocket, even with tip-up carry, unlike some liner locks.I bought this knife for one reason: the ZDP 189 blade steel. ZDP is like nothing else in my experience. I used to have a William Henry DLC ZDP that I carried, but sadly I lost it. I replaced it with a WH Damascus type ZDP blade but was not happy with it. It seems that all ZDP is not created equal. The moment of truth came yesterday when I had to re-sharpen the AL Mar HD ZDP w/ my DMT Aligner (also purchased from KC). After only one try, the blade was again razor-sharp and left a section of my forearm bare of hair. This is now my EDC. I am a blue collar guy and use my knife at work all the time. This one cuts virtually effortlessly. One other caveat is that the weight according to my scale is 3.2 ounces, not the 3.0 advertised by KC. 3.2 is still good for a knife with a 4 inch blade, so I can't complain too much about that. Still, weight is important to me, and I don't understand why purveyors can't get it right. It is possible that my scale just needs to be calibrated but I doubt itFinally this knife is inherently one of the most aesthetically pleasing I have ever had. I like the blade shape, which reminds me of the Italian stilettos that I carried as a kid. The fit & finish is great. When I run my finger over the joint between blade and lock bar, it's tough to detect where one ends and the other begins.Ultimately pretty is as pretty does, This knife cuts almost effortlessly, which is what I have a knife for. I wish it were made in a version w/ 3.5 inch DLC coated blade, flipper finger guard, and pivot bearing.
