Pros: Blade Material, Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Handle Material, None
Cons: Overall Quality
A good sturdy working knife...but
This is a perfectly useful knife, but my example had a multitude of cosmetic flaws. For one thing, the tang on the pen blade was almost square, making it very sharp. I stoned it down, and it is better now. The spine of the master clip blade had small scalloped gouges where it was unevenly ground. Highly noticeable grind marks on both blades. Uneven grinding on the bolsters... I could go on. Don't get me wrong, Bear uses good material. The stainless steel they use sharpens up beautifully. The knife opens and closes smoothly, with snap like an alligator. The rosewood scales are pretty and feel good. So, as a tool it functions perfectly in every way. But, with intense competition from China, Bear had better teach it's workers to slow down a bit, and mind the fit and finish more. I bought this jack knife because it was made in the USA. However, it doesn't hold a candle to my Schrade USA Old Timer in terms of fit and finish, and many of the Chinese knives are machined better as well, at about a third of the cost. Fortunately for Bear, it is the steel that matters most to me, and that is why I may buy more of their knives. But some consumers may not be so forgiving...
