Description
BCIV26D: Mastodon Ivory Upswept Executive Lockback
Bear & Son Cutlery

This knife features ivory taken from buried, extinct mammals and not from any living species. These products do not contribute to the slaughter or maiming of living creatures.

Bear & Son owner Ken Griffey found himself looking through some old family photographs some time ago and became drawn to a particular photograph he had never seen before. It was a photo of his Grandfather holding an old Robeson knife. He could not wait to call his father to see if he knew about the whereabouts of the knife. Not only did they find the knife but they also found a few other knives his Grandfather had owned as well. We all come to think about our heritage at some point in our lives, the photograph of Griffey's Grandfather really made him focus on his own. What could be more appropriate than for Bear & Son Cutlery to make some knives in the style of those old knives his Grandfather had owned and loved so long ago?

His Grandfather would be proud of the American-made quality with which these knives are made. They feature genuine Mastodon Ivory handles handles, most have long nail pull marks and highly polished 440 Stainless Steel or Damascus blades. This Upswept Executive Lockback features a Bear USA tang stamp, Nickel Silver bolsters, and comes packaged in a special tin box. More than 91 hand steps by a staff of skilled craftsman will assure the quality matching those knives that were favorites of Ken Griffey's Grandfather so long ago.

Damascus steel combines steels of different properties and produces blades with extraordinary toughness and edge-holding ability. Known as the Steel of the Ancients, Damascus knives and swords have lived in legend since the creation of Damascus steel nearly 2,000 years ago. The ancient city of Damascus was one of the centers of production of this steel. That, combined with the fact that the steel resembled the damask cloth which was being produced in the city of Damascus- both having a “water-marked” pattern- gave this steel its name. Viewed under a microscope, the cutting edge of a Damascus blade displays tiny saw-tooth carbides which are formed by forging in a coal fire. This enables the blade to cut even when it feels dull to the touch. Flexibility is superb. Every piece of Damascus is as unique as a thumb print. When ground on an angle, as in a blade, the displayed pattern is stunning. Note: Limited quantities available.

Cons: None
Very nice
The ivory is subtle, but much more striking in front of me than it seemed in the picture. This size is a perfect fit in my fifth pocket. The finish out of the box is pretty good, not great, but I spent a little time smoothing, buffing, and polishing, and am very pleased with how it cleaned up. The original edge was very sharp. It needed light dressing after clean up, but is now broken-glass sharp, even better than original. The nickel-silver bolsters polish brighter than stainless steel, with a less whitish tint. Lockup is good, with no play whatsoever, but if you lift the lock and slide the blade around in the bolsters, the slight play in,out, up, and down, make clear the pin's several thousandth's smaller than the pivot hole in the tang. Blade pivot's a little tight but I expect it will be perfect when used a bit. Delivery was very fast: Ordered Saturday, shipped (cheapest) Wednesday, arrived across country Friday. I think this will be an excellent pocket knife and a fantastic value.

Great Collectible Piece For The Price
I've always been interested in fossils and ancient artifacts. As a long time fan of knives, but fairly recent collector, I was amazed to find the listing for Bear and Son Ivory from prehistoric mastodons. Not a fossil I am likely to dig up in the back yard! I spent some weeks searching the web for a better price and KnifeCenter came through. It took about 6 weeks for delivery. Worth the wait. The knife is overall of good quality, uniformly ground and very well polished. The scales have the slightest hint of coloration and small streaks one should expect from something of that age. Just what I had hoped for, not the plain white of the pictures. The Damascus blade is quite good with strong character and a visual 3D texture. It feels smooth, but the nickel lines seem to rise above the carbon steel. It's a collectible and won't be carried in a pocket with keys and change! In my studies of fossil ivory, I've read to rub it with mineral oil a couple of times a year. Bear doesn't mention this in the paperwork.
