BM551: Griptilian - Pardue Design
Benchmade

The Griptilian is born of custom knife maker Mel Pardue's passion for functional designs. You release the creature's ferocity with a thumb stud. At the very heart of the Griptilian, is the exclusive AXIS™ locking mechanism. This modern marvel gives life to a cutting tool like you have never experienced before, especially in a lightweight folder. Rock-solid ambidextrous function is sure to tame the most die-hard of traditionalists. And you can grab onto the lightweight, injection molded handle with its grip-textured surface and rib covered spine that grabs you right back for a "can't let go" grip. The Model 551 also comes with a reversible carry-clip for right or left side carry.

Benchmade AXIS Lock
AXIS®
A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it’s inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Ease of Opening, Blade Material, Lock Type, Weight, Pocket Clip, None
Cons: Handle Material, Handle Feel
Great Blade, small handle
I use this knife for EDC. The blade is incredible strong and sharp out of the box. It looks awesome, it is a beautiful good looking knife. The dawn side for me is, that I am a big hand guy and the handle on this beauty is to small for me.I wish Benchmade heard this and make a larger version of this Great Knife for Big Hand Guys like me...

Pros: None
Cons: Handle Material
Super strong blade without any blade play. Razor sharp out of the box. Very smooth locking. Beautiful Axis-Locking mechanism. The only thing i can say is the cheap plastic like handle and it makes very cheap and hollow, empty bang when it locks up. Very happy i picked one up before the price went up...

Cons: Handle Feel, Handle Material
The right choice.
Initially, I was undecided between the full-size 551 and the mini-grip, but since I had been carrying a Kershaw Leek of similar size to the mini, and after having viewed numerous reviews in both written and video form, I chose the 551. Many of the negative comments with respect to the handle scale material as well as the "hollow", cheap sound of the lock-up (attributed to the partial liners), are accurate. Why this knife is not made in an open back design with G-10 scales is a mystery as it would be a perfect knife IMO. That's what keeps this knife from getting a 5 rating. Now for the much overused, "with that being said": Try as they might, the above noted deficiencies cannot stop one from falling in love with this knife! The 154CM modified drop-point blade geometry is a thing of beauty to behold, truly. It was scary-sharp OTB. The AXIS lock, however, is what truly sets this knife apart IMO. Be forewarned: it's very hard to resist playing with this knife. The blade deploys as least as fast as the Kershaw with its "speed safe", assisted opening. Because the Grip is a larger knife, I still carry the Leek when wearing dress pants. But with jeans, the Grip comes along. I have yet to hard-use this, so I can't provide any comment, but there is a least one hard use torture test on Youtube, which subjects this knife to more abuse that any sane person might. This was my first purchase from Knife Center. I was pleasantly surprised by the price, service and delivery. I will surely be back. Oh, just get the knife, will you?
