Description
BM551BKOD: 551BKOD Drop Point Griptilian
Benchmade

The Griptilian is born of custom knife maker Mel Pardue's passion for functional designs. You release the creature's ferocity with a thumb stud. At the very heart of the Griptilian, is the exclusive AXIS™ locking mechanism. This modern marvel gives life to a cutting tool like you have never experienced before, especially in a lightweight folder. Rock-solid ambidextrous function is sure to tame the most die-hard of traditionalists. And you can grab onto the lightweight, injection molded handle with its grip-textured surface and rib covered spine that grabs you right back for a "can't let go" grip. The Model 551 also comes with a reversible carry-clip for right or left side carry.

  • 154CM: An American made premium grade stainless steel originally developed for tough industrial applications. Known for its best all-around qualities, it offers great corrosion resistance with good toughness and edge quality.
  • AXIS® A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it's inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

great knife
I have carried this knife for 8 years every day and it is as smooth opening as the day I bought it. there is very little play side to side, when I say very little I mean unnoticeable unless you really try to get it to move side to side. why is this impressive, I landscape. I don't intentionally abuse the knife but I have done the fallowing more than once. cut wire, cut sod, use the tip as a screwdriver, pry open irrigation valve boxes, cut ADS piping, cut burlap until the edge was almost rounded over, I could go on. but you should get the point this is a good knife.

This is my first benchmade and I really like it. The quality and materials are excellent, (except maybe zytel handles, im not a fan of them on high end knives but they do the job) the lock was really stiff at first but it loosens up pretty quick and now its much better, and also this knife locks up more solid than any knife that I have ever handled, absolutely no play to either side. The only way this knife could be better is if it had full liners, a pocket clip that was coated the same as the blade instead of painted (the paint will chip off easily and look bad as it already has a little) and kraton handles, but thats just me being picky. I highly reccomend this knife it is excellent.
