Benchmade AXIS Lock
A patented Benchmade exclusive, AXIS has been turning heads and winning fans ever since its introduction. A 100-percent ambidextrous design, AXIS gets its function from a small, hardened steel bar which rides forward and back in a slot machined into both steel liners. The bar extends to both sides of the knife, spanning the liners and positioned over the rear of the blade. It engages a ramped, tang portion of the knife blade when it is opened. Two omega style springs, one on each liner, give the locking bar it’s inertia to engage the knife tang, and as a result the tang is wedged solidly between a sizable stop pin and the AXIS bar itself.

Great Gift
I've carried the 551 for longer than I can remember. Bought one for my current son-in-law too. When my youngest daughter suggested a small knife for her fiance I didn't look any further than Benchmade. Since he doesn't need the longer blade of the 551 the 585 was the logical choice. He loves it. Solid grip, ambidextrous, and shaving sharp. It would have been good to have instructions in how to operate the Axis-Assist. Once he got used to it he was fine, still sporting all fingers. I've bought many items from Knife Center for both personal as well as for gifts. Never been dissatisfied with either product or service.

Well Worth It
This knife was purchased new for EDC and replaced a SOG-TAC TiNi automatic that I have carried for about 3 years. I normally shy away from Benchmade (only other I have is a Nim Cub), due to my feelings that for my circumstances, they are not worth the money they cost. Getting the knife on a decent sale, I can honestly say I am extremely pleased with the quality, craftsmanship, and functionality. The AXIS assist is incredible, and the knife is superbly constructed. The knife doesn't open until you want it to, and I have found with automatic knives that they can open accidentally, and the safeties are often hard to manipulate. I do not feel the handles look or feel cheap, and the lockup is very tight. I would highly recommend, especially on sale!
