Description
BU309: 309 Companion Knife
Buck Knives

Classic, convenient and multi-purpose. A dual purpose knife with a spear blade, featuring a strong tip for piercing, and a pen blade perfect for an all purpose blade. 420HC stainless steel blades. This is Buck's standard blade material because it approaches the wear resistance of high carbon alloys while delivering the corrosion resistance of chromium stainless steels. Add Buck's exclusive heat-treat process and you have a very user-friendly combination of superior corrosion resistance with excellent strength for wear resistance and durability. You also have a blade that is easy to resharpen. For best performance we harden to a Rockwell hardness of Rc 58. This is designed with extra attention to detail and hand finished so they fit comfortably in your pocket as well as in your hand.

my 309 buck high scool grad gift in 2000
I GOT THIS KNIFE GIVEN TO ME 6/10/2000 AS A HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION GIFT FROM A FRIEND AND HAVE CARRIED IT SINCE THEN. MY TANG STAMP DATES IT AS A 2000 PRODUCTION YEAR. I STILL EVEN HAVE THE ORIGINAL BOX AND PAPERS FOR IT . THIS KNIFE WAS MADE AT THE EL CAJON CALIFORNIA FACTORY. I HAVE CARRIED IT FOR 14 YEARS NOW THE MAIN BLADE IS SHARPENED DOWN A BIT DUE TO CONTINOUS USE EVERYDAY FOR THE PAST 14 YRS. THIS WAS MY VERY FIRST BUCK KNIFE I EVERY OWNED AND NOW OWN SEVERAL HUNTING KNIVES SO THE BUCK BRAND IS ALL I CARRY. I AM THINKING OF BUYING ANOTHER 309 COMPANION TO CARRY SO I CAN KEEP MY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION ONE PUT UP CAUSE I REALLY DONT WANT TO LOSE IT BECAUSE IT HAS A LOT OF MEANING TO ME. MY HANDLES ARE WORN DOWN SMOOTH FROM CONSTANT CARRY OVER 14 YRS . THE 420 HC STEEL SHARPEN'S VERY WELL FOR ME IT HAS BEEN A GREAT KNIFE AND HAS DONE EVERTHING FROM OPENING BOXES TO BEING USED EVERY WEEKEND CAMPING FROM APRIL 1 TILL NOV 1. ONLY TIME IT DONT GET CARRIED IS WHEN I GO IN WOODS TO SQUIRRL HUNT OR GO DEER HUNTING IM AFARIED THAT I WILL LOSE IT. I HAVE OTHER BRAND OF KNIVES I COULD CARRY BUT I AM STILL PARTIAL TO MY BUCK KNIVES SINCE MY VERY FIRST ONE IN 2000. THEY HAVE JUST BEEN GOOD TO ME AND HOLD A GOOD EDGE FOR A LONG TIME DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU ARE CUTTING WITH THE KNIFE. I FIND IT IS REALLY HANDY FOR OPENING MAIL WHEN I NEED TO.

Well made, needs honing
This is a good little pocket knife. It weighs very little, but is just big enough for a solid grip if the situation requires it. Made in the USA, it is solidly constructed. Exterior surfaces are flush and snag free, except for the center pin on one side. Springs are sufficiently stiff, the blades are perfectly aligned. The small blade has no play, while the large blade just a hint. Buck's 420HC appears to have good hardness. The reason why I did not give it 5 stars is the blades were not sharp out of the box and required a fair bit of work, and the small blade is undesirably chunky. The blades are sharp, but not crazy sharp like my carbon steel blades. This knife is usually in my pocket, and it opens boxes, bags of snacks, and cuts down packaging for the trash. Over time, my appreciation of this knife will probably grow.
