CR1070: Koji Hara Ichi
Columbia River

These knives have been designed to give you a choice between conventional opening or super-fast assisted opening, employing our patented OptiFast assisted opening mechanism. We call it OptiFast because the assisted opening mechanism is both optional, and also optimum in terms of simplicity and reliability. You initiate opening using the thumb stud or disk, and after 30°, OptiFast takes over, giving instant lockup. The OptiFast spring is held in place by a single set screw which allows you to remove or replace the spring in minutes. It gives a new level of choice in folding knives. The cutaway view below shows the OptiFast mechanism in place.

Award-winning Japanese knifemaker Koji Hara created this perfectly-balanced personal knife series especially for CRKT.

We were delighted when internationally-known Japanese knifemaker and American Knifemakers’ Guild member Koji Hara agreed to design a personal knife for CRKT. Koji is noted for his custom folders in exotic materials, and is especially known for his carving of the handle material into a classic terraced landscape that he calls his “Air-Step” design. Our goal was to apply Koji’s remarkable design sense to a small personal folder which could incorporate our patented OptiFast assisted opening mechanism.

Logically, we called this first CRKT Koji Hara series Ichi, Japanese for “one.”

For rigidity and strength, we used our InterFrame open build, with two 420J2 stainless steel liners. In a first for CRKT, we created layered injection molded scales of Kraton and Zytel, the latter with Koji’s terraced Air-Step design. The result is a small knife that gives good grip, fits the hand nicely, and is truly functional for a variety of work tasks.

The handle tapers neatly into a modified drop point pen blade with a high hollow grind made of high carbon stainless steel. An ambidextrous thumb disk allows easy one-hand opening.

Most of us can’t carry a Koji Hara custom collectible daily, but the Ichi is a friendly and affordable reminder of one of Japan’s premier custom knifemakers.

The thumb stem will break you thumb nail in trying to open the knife
The blade was very sharp, but the problem is in trying to open the blade, the thumb stem is too short and you will break you thumb nail in trying to opening the blade!mr Koji ?Hara, needs to change how the opening method on his knife,I thought the size of the blade is great to get pass FSA at the airports,I believe that a 21/2" blade is allowed ona plane, but the "Ichi is not an EDC knife for me,I also ordered the Kershaw Voit II and that is a great ?EDC knife with an Attutude! Great filpper and great blade! On the KershawI would give it a five stars!

Cons: Ease of Opening, Pocket Clip
very very NOT worth owning for anything other than a "collectors item"
I was pleasantly NOT happy with this particular knife. It isn't even worth the money or trouble to return it. It just does NOT do what it is supposed to do (which is "pop open". The mechanism is just plain a bad design. The thumb (or index finger) "stud" is way too close to the pivot point (as has already been pointed out). And POINTED out brings up another small problem in MY extremely clumsy hands. I've managed now to pierce my poor left thumb while playing with this knife (including disassembling it TWICE) in an attempt to improve the function of the "outburst". My thumb bleeds fine now. The holes will heal in short order. But as a knife to actually carry and use? NOT A CHANCE. It will go into my drawer with all the other knives that I've collected (cheap AND expensive) and will be regarded as a curiosity with little or no use as a knife. The pocket clip is also very unfriendly when used to clip into a pocket. Way too small and way too tight. Too bad. I have really loved all my other CRKT tools and knives.
