CR2907: 2907 Hissatsu - Designed by James Williams
James Williams, the designer of the Hissatsu™, is a former Army officer and martial arts practitioner/instructor with over 45 years of experience. He knows cutlery as President of Bugei Trading Company, producer of fine Samurai swords. As one who has trained tactical law enforcement and military forces for the SureFire Institute, he has developed a unique and powerful approach to unarmed combatives. His system of defensive tactics, known as The System of Tactical Strategy, has its origins in the ancient Samurai military systems as well as the Russian military art of Systema.

A key part of this system is the Hissatsu based on an old Japanese design. The unique shape of the blade, made famous by the legendary Samurai warlord Takeda Shingen, provides enormous penetrating power and superior slashing capability in one blade, which works with the natural motion of the body. James arrived at this modern version as a backup weapon for close-quarters combat. This is a focused single-purpose knife for use in anti-terrorist/close-quarters battle (CQB) environments, either as a primary or a secondary weapon to augment the handgun in the hands of trained professionals.

The Hissatsu's dual grind Tanto blade is 440A stainless steel, high satin finished. For those who prefer a non-reflective finish, the Hissatsu is available with a black EDP blade or in Desert Tan dress with titanium nitride blade coating.

To aid in law enforcement and military training, a Hissatsu Trainer is now available with a blue handle and aluminum blade with a rounded trainer edge.

The handle is in a traditional Japanese pattern, but is Twin-Fused™, double injection-molded with a high-impact polypropylene core, butt and hilt, and a non-slip soft textured rubber grip handle surface. Oyatsubo, the emperor node on the omote (outside/public side) of the tuska (handle), allows you to know which direction the blade is facing, even in compromised lighting conditions, by touch.

The custom injection-molded glass filled nylon sheaths (in matching black, Desert Tan or blue) grip the knife firmly, and have removable belt clips which can be attached high or low, vertical or horizontal with the black two-piece screws provided. There are also holes and slots for carry on belts, webbing or equipment.

The Hissatsu is intended for use only by trained law enforcement and military tactical team professionals. Enormous power in a light, flat package makes for easy carry with many options for placement on tactical gear.

He knows cutlery as President of Bugei Trading Company, producer of fine Samurai swords. Pros: Blade Sharpness, Sheath/Scabbard, Handle Material, Blade Material, Materials, Weight, Overall Quality, Finish
Cons: None
This knife is built like a self defense weapon should be, thick enough to not break and ground to a edge that will get the job done! Fits the sheath well doesn't fall out when shaken. Just as the video with the designer Mr Williams showed. This is one you should have in your go bag.

Quality at a Budget Price
At the outset I should say that I am a fan of James Williams, the designer of the Hissatsu and that I also own some pieces from the Bugei Trading Company. I will however try and give an unbiased review. This was one of the items from my first order from Knife Centre and despite the great reviews I was a little reserved as I live in London (United Kingdom). That said, service was absolutely first class (Well done all at Knife Centre!) The chosen courier kept me updated all the way as did the email alerts from Knife Centre. The only uncertainty was UK Customs but that worked out fine after the duly paid duty ! I have some traditionally made Japanese Tanto type blades and at first appearance the Hissatsu puts on a good show. The blade is not an EDC (particularly in the UK) and has a solid comfortable weight. The grind is unconventional but adequate. I believe the fact that it has great penetrating power for CQB environments, as a collector it will not be tested to extreme by me. I opted for the high satin finish and it is "proper sharp" ! I am disappointed by the text on the blade either blasted or etched, the text halfway down the blade is of poor quality and detracts from the quality of the steel. CRKT could do better.... The handles polypropylene core holds the blade rigidly and the textured rubber handle would be comfortable and practical with gloves. The nylon ends are cleverly decorated and no doubt the choice of materials keeps the price down. Whilst I like the idea of the decal showing you the outside of the blade, in a time critical scenario only correct deployment after practice will ensure effectiveness. The nylon sheath looks like a Kydex type material (in black for the satin blade) it does indeed grip the knife firmly enough for inverted carry, yet a sharp pull brings it out easily for action. The belt clip add a huge number of carry options. I also purchased the Heiho and Hissatsu Folder both reviewed. In summary this is a great tactical fighting blade at a budget price, it is however not an all rounder that could be used to pry open tins etc. If you want better quality opt for the Hisshou at nearly four times the price. You get what you pay for and this is worth paying for if you want a CQB fixed blade outside of the usual suspects. It gets a four due to the tacky text on the blade, otherwise it would get a five.

Good low priced knife
This is a decently made, affordable knife. I like the design. It's different from the average tanto. The grip material is fine, but the grip itself is a little thin (I don't have big hands). I'm guessing that is to keep the profile slim for carry. It's always bold to give a blade a high polish as it reveals every error. There are a few minor waves in the finish but nothing out of place at this price. I'm happy with the purchase.
