CR7255Z: 7255Z Lake 111 Z
Ron Lake been called "the father of the modern folding knife" and literally co-authored the book on them in 1988, How to Make Folding Knives. But while Ron is busy making stunning custom folders in his Eugene, Oregon, workshop, he is always thinking. In this case, we believe he has perfected the lockback folder.

The Lake 111 Z model is a full-size knife with a 3.125" blade and measures 7.25" overall when opened. This model comes with a custom denim sheath with a belt loop and snap closure.

Ron's breakthrough is his patented Lock Back Safety (L.B.S.), which allows the user to slide the small L.B.S. button forward to lock the blade both in the open and closed positions. When locked open, it is virtually impossible to accidentally release the blade even during vigorous cutting tasks. For those who are concerned about accidental opening, in-pocket or on-belt, simply slide the button forward to lock the knife closed until its next use.

The blade is a classic drop point with a flat grind for strength and a brushed finish. Blade steel is premium 8Cr14MoV stainless steel (equivalent to AUS 8). Dual Lake-style thumb studs give fast either-hand opening, and the lockback release allows easy one-hand closing.

The lockback design allows for a very flat build. The combination of stainless steel liners and tough glass filled nylon scales results in a very rigid frame. For grip, the black handle features a basketweave texture and a pronounced finger choil and pommel.

Over the years, others have tried to devise safeties for lockback folders, but Ron's is the most effective and sophisticated we have seen. He really has something to crow about.

The lockback system has been used for many decades. It can usually be found on the knife spine and it provides a strong lockup that will wear well.

Pros: Overall Quality, Weight, Blade Material, Blade Sharpness, Sheath, Handle Feel, None
Cons: Pocket Clip, Sheath
Very good EDC
This knife is fantastic for the price. Its thin, fairly light, shaving sharp blade out of the box, good ratio of handle length to blade, easy to open and a good pocket clip. The quality is great, like all of my other CRKT knives. This one was manufactured in China unlike my other two CRKT which were made in Taiwan and those are the best quality pocket knives that I have; excluding blade material. Since it was made in China I was expecting it to lack slightly in quality and it only does in the quality of the handle screws but only slightly. The pivot screw is adjustable with a Torx screw which is an update from the other version that only used a special "key" that came with the knife. The slide lock that keeps the blade from opening and closing when engaged is useful for me only as a preventative for opening just in case my knife falls out and some kid picks it up. Other than that it doesn't seem necessary since the lock-back dose a good job of keeping the blade open. There is no play in the blade and the alignment is dead center. Its not my favorite knife compared to my dozens of other knives but I'm glad I added it to the collection. The sheath is denim and not really my style so its just put away in storage. I guess I could throw it in a jar of black dye to give it a different look but I just don't use sheathes. For the price and quality, this is a must!

Very NIce Knife
I've collected slip joints for several years now and I never cared that much for tactical knives. I saw this one and decided to give it a try. I have a couple of liner locks (pocket size) from Gerber and I just never felt that safe using a liner lock that's one reason I choose this knife because of the lock back design. I like the texture and design of the handles and the knife is a perfect size for the hand. Nice grip design too. I also like the partial serrated edge. Not much I don't like about the knife. One thing, not being used to tactical design knives I find the knife hard to open using the pin. I guess it take some getting use to. Knife came extremely sharp. It seems to be a quality product but I can't say much about he steel used in the blade since I just got it. The lock back spring is very hard and must be depressed completely ( as far as it will go) in order to release the blade to close. Four stars because the knife is hard to open with the pin. Very nice denim sheath heavy duty.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Lock Type, Handle Feel, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: Sheath, None
Am using my CRKT Lake as a EDC. It came very sharp out of the box; I just stropped it (I do every new knife). Light weight. Had to work a bit to smooth out the lock back release (sort of like tuning a gun trigger mechanism). I don't usually like lock backs having gotten use to liner locks, but this is a fine knife (esp. for this price). The sheath is not necessary (mine's now in a drawer) and the lock-lock seems a bit of overkill. As usual the KC folks delivered fast. For the price, this is an excellent buy.
