Description
CR7904DIN: Hammond Desert Cruiser
Columbia River Knife & Tool

Jim Hammond's Cruiser is a multi-purpose folder that has garnered much praise.

The Cruiser abounds with design subtleties. For example, the handle features a forward slanted friction grooved thumb ramp and a deep finger choil for the index finger, allowing what is known as the "fencer's grip".

To simplify the clean open build, a unique blade stop channel is CNC machined within the blade. This in turn, allows a friction grooved, tapered blade extension (or flipper) which aids opening the Cruiser, and then neatly completes the finger choil. It has been called "the sweetest flipper in the business."

In translating Jim's custom Cruiser into production, Columbia River used their extremely durable InterFrame build with 420J2 stainless steel liners, one locking. The injection molded black textured Zytel scales featuring their Operator's Grip are radiused and contoured with swells to perfectly fit the hand. The long handle, with a pronounced pommel, feels secure and entirely right.

Their work and sport version of the Cruiser use tough 8CR14MoV stainless steel for the clip-point blade. It has a high hollow grind that curves upward near the tip and a long false top edge, making it an exceptionally versatile work tool. Dual thumb studs and Teflon blade bearings at the blade pivot allow smooth one hand opening and closing.

They've also incorporated the patented Lake And Walker Knife Safety (LAWKS®) into the Cruiser, which makes the folder a virtual fixed blade when engaged.

To give the Cruiser maximum utility in a variety of work situations, Columbia River had Jim design a special paddle style pocket clip, which can be attached in four positions: tip up, tip down, left or right. (The Cruiser is not designed for tip-up in-pocket carry.) Two clips and extra torx screws are included. The stainless steel clips are Teflon plated.

Pros: Blade Sharpness, Lock Type, Handle Material, Overall Quality, Pocket Clip, Ease of Opening, Handle Feel, Weight, Lock Ease of Use, Blade Material
Cons: None
Perfect handle feel, ergonomics, and weight. Always liked the CRKT quality. Used to own 2 "Bwanas" CRKT and I lost them !!! They are discontinued now. Why ??? This will not replace the Bwana, but it is an acceptable substitute for EDC in my line of work, horse and mule packing, where cutting ropes in emergency is to be considered. Good size too. Some of these folders are too small! For me anyway… Also glad it came in the tan color, and I didn't have to put up with the usual black handle.

Heavy and strong. Hard to adjust.
I bought this (from another vendor) with the intention of using it as an EDC blade. It's heavy, which doesn't bother me because it can probably stand up to a bit of abuse. My main issues with the knife are that you need three different torx bits to adjust it (t6 for clip screws and thumb stud, t9 for the liner lock side of pivot screw, and t10 for the opposite side of the pivot screw). The pivot is hard to adjust to a level where the flipper and the LAWKS system are both functional and there is minimal blade play. If it's loose enough to flip open with extreme ease, the blade has a very pronounced wobble, and if it's adjusted to the point that the blade play is gone, the flipper and the LAWKS system are very hard to actuate effectively. Also, the blade needed both sharpening and honing out of the box. I'd say I'm not impressed, but at this price the knife is still a great value!
