Description
CRK405KXP: Ripple Black Pocket Worn
Columbia River Knife & Tool

He's back. He's here. Ken Onion Ripple.

In their first collaboration, Ken Onion and CRKT introduce their Ripple series of folding frame locks with premium stainless steel build and a stiction-free IKBS ball-bearing pivot.

Columbia River Knife & Tool and noted knife designer Ken Onion are proud to introduce their first collaboration together, the Ripple folding knife series.

This knife is noteworthy for its exceptional manufacturing quality, premium stainless steel build, plus an almost unbelievable silky smooth and fast opening action thanks to the use of the IKBS internal knife ball bearing system.

The modified drop point blade has a high hollow grind, swedged top edge, a high satin finish and Razor-Sharp cutting edge. Steel is premium Acuto, stainless, noted for its high chromium and molybdenum content and hardness of 59-60 HRC. It is instantly opened by pressing the blade flipper with either hand. For safety while closed, the blade has a ball detent.

Even the best conventional blade pivot bearings have some degree of friction which resists initial movement, or “stiction.” In contrast, the Ripple blade opening action is almost friction-free due to the IKBS ball bearing system. This innovative and simple design places eight uncaged ball bearings on each side of the blade pivot in races which are machined into the stainless steel handle. It is compact and adjustable at the blade pivot screw if ever needed. Not only is opening and closing exceptionally smooth, the IKBS system is durable and requires little maintenance, and yields a folder with great rigidity and no blade play.

This Ripple KX405 models are frame lock open build knives with stainless steel frames. In typical Ken Onion attention to detail, the frame lock does not create an unsightly gap in the right frame, but its cut is neatly integrated into the grip design of the frame, which is CNC machined with a complex ‘ripple’ textured pattern plus 44 small lightening holes.

The Ripple KX405KXP receives a black titanium nitride coating, which we then hand buff to give a pocket worn look, that is to lightly reveal the underlying stainless steel on the high points. The Ripple KX405BXP achieves the same effect, but with a dark ultramarine blue titanium nitride finish.

Both models feature a removable stainless steel mirror polished pocket clip, high-mounted, and also with small CNC-drilled holes.

This knife combines brilliant design, custom knife quality, and advanced manufacturing technology.

Cons: Blade Sharpness, None
art-like Intriguing handle design.
My is a K405KXP model first production. this was the knife that got me collecting knifes. its design is so intriguing and everyone seas in it something else as to me it's handle shape looked like a fossil fish, but others i've showed this knife have mentions a whale a chameleon or lizard of sort and even a dolphin. the Ken Onion knife design is out of this world my first production has some rough & sharp corners but i think it was mended somewhat in this later runs. once flipped passed the strong detent ball this knife will shoot open and effectively this blade cannot be made to open half way! or failed flipper semi open. once you past detent its 100% fly out smooth like its a hovering on a cloud due to the bearing system which is easy to open & maintain & clean. (careful not to lose one of these tiny ball bearings) you can walk with it 24/7 in pocket and you would forget you carry it because its so light & nearly unnoticeable in pocket 4.5 out of 5.

Cons: Weight, Handle Feel, Pocket Clip
CRKT Ripple
Knife blade, opening system, and sharpness are great. Handle material is very rough with sharp edges. Weight seems excessive for an edc knife. Pocket clip lets knife turn sideways when wearing loose dress pants. This would be a great knife if the handle material could be changed to some kind of plastic and clip moved to other end. Would not buy again with same handle.

Impressive!
I can sum up my impression of this knife in one word: "Wow!". I generally prefer Ken Onion's assisted openers over "flip" style openers but this one is very smooth and almost intuitive. The blade is, as usual, razor sharp right out of the box, sufficiently large and sitting in a light, thin frame. This knife is quickly becoming my favorite EDC!
