Description
CRK900KKP: Shakaulu - Designed by Ken Onion
Columbia River

Unusual specialty hunting knives have been a CRKT staple for many years, and this one is no exception. Conceived by Hawaiian knifemaker and big game hunter Ken Onion, this knife is the fusion of two ancient tools: the ulu palm knife and scraper of Alaskan and Canadian tribes, plus the cleaver. Both tools go back many thousands of years, and the earliest flaked stone ulus found date back more than 50,000 years.

As a laid-back Hawaiian, Ken has named the product for the shaka Aloha spirit handsign, thus it's the Onion Shakaulu™.

Ken developed this tool because there is a real need for it. After taking a large game animal it is a versatile tool for the heavy-duty tasks, with a gut hook, a fully curved Razor-Sharp skinning edge, and a handle that allows it to be used as a cleaver to separate pelvic bones, or even to quarter a large carcass in the field.

The blade of the Shakaulu is exceptionally thick and heavy, the hallmark of a traditional cleaver. It has a high convex grind for maximum strength. The blade is made of 65MN carbon steel for maximum toughness, and is black powder coated to resist corrosion.

The handle is Twin-Fused™— first injection molded with a hard black polypropylene handle form, which is followed by softer dark green TPE plastic inserts. The handle is ergonomic, giving a secure grip in cold weather and while wearing gloves.

For skinning, the Shakaulu can be gripped high like an ulu, with the thumb on the thumb hole. For cleaving, it can be gripped by the handle.

Because the Shakaulu is a heavy tool, Ken designed a special heavy-duty molded polypropylene sheath that incorporates a locking pin, on a flexible retaining strap, that goes through the tool's thumb hole. This sheath allows secure inverted carry, and is convertible left or right. A removable belt clip is included, and the sheath has multiple slots and grommets to allow lashing to a backpack or pack animal.

The Shakaulu should not be confused with a brush cutter or hatchet. It is a much more sophisticated skinning tool, and the Razor-Sharp edge is not intended for such use.

But if you need to make short work of a large animal before the snow flurries, or hyenas, close in, the Shakaulu is the tool for you.

Ken Onion Shakaulu Skinner
As a butcher and knife lover for over 5 decades, this is the best knife by far I have ever owned. It has proved equal to every task for which is was designed and after I ran it over my sharpening steel it cuts like a scalpel. It fits in the hand as if I were a robot and the knife was an interchangeable attachment-when I first got it I honestly couldn't put it down. I use it for any task round the house a knife can be used for and find it is PERFECT to use when I am cooking. I have read some reviews that seem to indicate that the centre pin which holds it in place is not such a great feature but I find the scabbard itself holds it in place. Granted, I am not a great outdoorsman any more thanks to an auto accident but I still find the scabbard does a very good job holding onto that marvellous blade. I have designed a shoulder holster as an alternative carry and with the pin removed it deploys very well in its upside down position. This knife is by far the most practical and versatile I have ever used and I can't rate it highly enough. I ordered my knife months ago and tonight went looking for all the distributors I could that carry it. I know it is close to Christmas but out of all the websites I checked every single one was sold out. This must tell us something!! Thanks again for a fantastic blade!

Magnificent
Multi-purpose is the word that comes to mind. Its everything I ever wanted in a cleaver/ hatchet/ skinner/ guthook. When I got the box I immediately noticed the weight. I've never been a fan of lightweight tools when it came time to do heavy work so the blade was looking good from start. Out the box I saw that that nice black coating and a some what bulky black and green handle of course I also notice the cutting edge. The edge may not be the sharpest in the world but it's sharp enough to get the job done. When it came time to use, it was like the blade was doing nearly all of the work. It may have only been fish but it made short work of getting that fish from the water to the block and then to grill. That being said this blade has some weight to it(top-heavy may be an understatement) and the handle may seem like its in an akward position but, the weight of the blade kinda forces the handle to stay in the palm of your hand. Also the grip has that nice rubber bump and groove so keeping a grip on it is eaiser than keeping a grip on yourself. I only have one minor issue. The sheath has a key that attaches it to the sheath which keeps the blade from falling out when its not in use, that key can and has fallen off of the little rubber strap . Its an easy fix so theres no reason to worry its also made like that so you can switch between a left and right side carry. So in conclusion an exceptional multi-purpose blade/tool that makes and awesome gift for the outdoorsman/ hunter/ fisherman or yourself
