Description
CRM1603Z: M16-03Z Carson
CRKT

For years, Kit Carson's M16® designs have been our most popular series. And our Z version has built the largest user base of all. These knives are built for function, not fad. And they are exceptional values.

The M16®-03Z and M16®-13Z are slim designs with spear point blades. They are ideal for a variety of carry positions.

They use our very successful InterFrame construction, tough, textured glass filled nylon scales over a 420J2 stainless steel liner InterFrame. We overbuild it for rigidity, using solid glass filled nylon back spacers. And we assemble the handle with superior offset Torx® fasteners. The handle is exceptionally rigid and fills the hand perfectly.

We use our tough AUS 4 high-carbon stainless steel for the blades to give greater everyday utility, and offer both Razor-Sharp and Combined Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ Serrated edges.

All models feature the Carson Flipper, which is not only an aid to opening the blade, especially when wearing gloves, but acts as a blade guard when the blade is open.

We've also incorporated our patented* AutoLAWKS™ automatic knife safety into all models, which converts the M16 Z series into virtual fixed blades when their blades are open and locked.

All styles have lubrous washers and a removable stainless steel clothing/gear clip.

Think of the M16-Z as a Clydesdale—ready to rush a knight into battle or pull a beer wagon. Every day. Day after day.

*U.S. Patent Nos. 5,596,808 and 7,437,822

About the Knife Designer
Kit Carson of Vine Grove, Kentucky, is a retired professional soldier, rising to the level of Sergeant Major. He has made knives for 30 years and has been a full-time knifemaker since 1993. He is a voting member of the Knifemakers’ Guild. Kit has been an avid hunter and fisherman for over 40 years, growing up enjoying the woods and trout streams in the mountains of north Georgia. About his philosophy of knife design, he says: “I strive to follow form and function in the knives I design and build. My reputation has been built around solid working knives, both fixed blade and folders. All the time spent outdoors as a young man and the time spent around the world with the Army has strongly influenced the knives I create.” Nothing reflects this approach more than the Carson Design of our M16 series, which is built for function, not to follow fads. This highly successful knife series was named one of the Top 10 Factory Tactical Folders of the Decade by Blade magazine. The M16-14M recently won a comparison test conducted by Germany’s Messer magazine.

Pros: Overall Quality, Lock Type, Handle Material, Handle Feel, Pocket Clip, None
Cons: Lock Ease of Use, Ease of Opening
Great but some drawbacks
I use this as my edc and its great until i came across some problems. The opening thing is kind of hard to open from the top, and the liner lock kind of hurts your thumb. Also if you open it too fast the liner lock device kind of gets stuck sometimes. I would recommend this knife to a friend just because its awesome though.

perfect edc
I use the knife as a edc. I like its weight, its blade and handle geometry. I also like the locking mechanism. For 35$ you can't go wrong with this one. It comes sharp right out of the box.

Well worth the money.
I've only had this knife for about a month and have yet to give it a real serious workout, but after the light use to which it has been subjected (routine backyard maintenance, opening products with thick plastic packing, cutting rope and cord, etc.) I am pleased with this product. It is very well made and immediately became my edc. (I have a Gerber Evo in my drawer and a side by side comparison is laughable. The CRKT is a quality product.) It opens smoothly with the flipper and just a slight wrist movement (and the flipper makes a good hilt - secure and comfortable). The handle is stout enough to provide a good grip for average sized hands like mine and the cut-out for the thumb studs, as well as the slight handle down turn at the butt end, allow easy removal after blade penetration. The pocket clip holds the knife securely but releases easily. (The clip allows for right side, tip down carry only). It was reasonably sharp out of the box, but like most knives benefited from some extra finishing. The blade is not super hard, but the flip side is that the edge hones and polishes easily. The auto-lawks is easy to get used to. All in all it's a nice knife. Well worth the money.
