Description
CS18H: Outdoorsman
Cold Steel

Cold Steel describes this item as follows:

We have had a lot of friends ask us to bring back the Outdoorsman. So we have dusted off the tooling and made a new run. Only this time we have added two new improvements. The first is jimping on the blade back. This gives the thumb and index finger more control of the edge as they now have a non-slip platform to rest on. The second is a chopping edge, or bone breaker. In our tests, this edge hacked through everything we put in front of it, including heavy gauge steel wire, so it's sure to stand up in the field! As before, the Outdoorsman will come with a heavy leather sheath, fitted with a brush proof retaining strap.

Typical Cold Steel blade
This knife was a gift to myself. I am a fan of Cold Steel knives in general and like the San Mai III range. Looks great handles well, razor sharp as usual. Like others have mentioned yes it's designed to be worn on the left side but when carrying a pistol this is not a problem. It's a simple cross draw. I will carry this knife on a elk hunt this year. I have no worries it will handle any job.

Cold Steel's excellence continues
I purchased this knife as a general 'camping/fishing' knife. I thought it might be a little too large for general purposes but was pleased that it is well balanced and quite flexible if used properly. The handle is excellent allowing for a firm comfortable grip even when wet. The blade, the primary, reason I purchased the knife is shaped from VG-10 steel and is extremely sharp right out of the box. I prefer this Japanese type of steel and although expensive, it is in mho one of the better choices on the market. While everyone has their favorite, this one is mine. It can be honed to a razor's edge and keeps that edge through a lot of usage. If I do have a "do over" moment it would be about the sheath. It is a quality product and attractive. However, I would have preferred a kydex type of sheath for better retention and better access to the knife and it's sheath. The knife's razor edge will eventually take its toll on the leather sheath and securing the snap to the handle for retention will be bothersome. I hope cold steel sees fit to make a kydex sheath that will fit most of its better blades. While not a cheap knife, it should be a long lasting knife an very usable blade.

It's good but...
The best you can buy from CS. But ... The sheet is designed to be carried only on the left hip (taht's probably influence of Japan and their way of carrying katanas). And VG1? Why? Because of the price? I'd rather pay bit more for VG10. And that's the only bad thing and the real reason why it cannot be compared, even though it's a probably the best CS, with Fallkniven (A1 or A2 are far a way better knives by sheet design and quality, by steel, buy balance... by everything). Still for this price it's a very good choice.
