Description
CS37S: 37S Recon Scout San Mai III
Cold Steel

In almost every respect, the Recon Scout is simply a 7-1/2 inch Trail Master Bowie. It offers the same steel, heat treatment, blade thickness, blade shape, and handle.

Unlike other combat knives, the Recon Scout's broad clip point is highly resistant to bending or breaking. It's ideal for long range cutting and slashing. Additionally, the blade is equipped with a slightly concave false edge that measures approximately 3-1/2" long.

Like the Trail Master, the Recon Scout has a slight curve along the entire length of the blade. This curve allows the blade to be used in a draw cut as well as a chopping stroke. Plus, the extra curve near the tip provides plenty of "belly" for emergency field dressing and skinning.

The Recon Scout comes complete with a tough Cor-Ex sheath.

Nothing special given the price
This knife would be a decent buy at about 50% of its current price, but for $260 one can buy significantly better knives around this size. I would not go so far as to say this is a bad knife--it is a nice size, fairly sturdy, and can take very sharp edge--but all in all the San Mai Recon Scout doesn't compare favorably to other premium-quality outdoor knives which which it competes. The biggest problem I had was: Cold Steel's "San Mai III" blades tend to be too brittle on the hard cutting edge, and thus chip far too easily right where chipping causes the most problems. The Recon Scout is no exception; mine chipped pretty badly with less than an hour's use on wood and scrub. Several millimeters of edge were ruined on a task that has never harmed any of my other similar knives. Many say that the sheath is terrible, but I've had worse. The CS sheath is simple, yes, but works OK for basic carry styles. It is a good idea to get a custom sheath made for any knife you carry for long periods anyway, so the sheath isn't too big an issue I think. There aren't much in terms of outstanding pros with this knife when compared to others in its price range. It does a lot of things reasonably well, but so do a number of medium-large knives around $100. CS works hard to hype their products and woo buyers with ridiculous implicit messages, but when you get past the manic marketing and look at what this knife actually does, it doesn't really justify costing $260. I highly recommend looking at other brands, or buying the high-carbon steel version of the Recon Scout for a lot less money.

Cold Steel Recon Scout
The Recon Scout is an amazing 7" bowie/clip blade knife its an extremely thick 19/64" .295" thick blade is full flat ground to an amazing factory edge, just a polish on the cutting edge and this would be a 7" scalpel. the handle is very comfortable and with a small lanyard you can get a vice like grip. the secure ex sheath is fantastic I prefer to get rid of the belt loop that screws onto the sheath and run 550 cord through the lashing holes and mount that way. The blade finish is pretty soft and it will wear off fairly quickly a titanium nitride coating or dlc would be nice but it would make the knife cost at least 30$ more You do need to oil this knife if you use it in the field it helps with woodworking but the sk5 version and the san mai3 version will rust a little on the edge if you dont. This knife is a great all around camp/utility knife it is heavy but that allows it to chop extremely well for a 7" knife. if your looking for reach or to span logs for splitting get a trailmaster. but for dealing with small diameter stuff you could do quite well with this knife and a small saw. I have no doubt that this knife will last a very long time, everything can and does break, extreme cold and impacts like batoning are very hard on knives, and under those circumstances a recon scout did break after getting stuck in a log (use lots of wd 40!!! ) but that was abused and it broke trying to get it out, after 20 min of basically hitting the handle with a baseball bat it broke off, the knife was stuck in a log to big to baton, it was very very cold around 10* and smacking the crap out of it was too much. I dont know of any knife that could have taken that and survived, the knife was old used hard for years and just gave out under extreme stress. could a new one have taken it? who knows probably not. A great knife it wont let you down 99.9% of the time The Recon Scout is a fantastic knife
