CS89VA: Viking Axe
Cold Steel
Viking Axe

Cold Steel has been a long time believer in the ferocious cutting power of a well-designed Viking Axe. Until recently, we lacked the technical ability to make one to our satisfaction. However, with our new state-of-the-art forging facility, we can offer our customers something truly exceptional.

Our Viking Axe's formidably long, thin blade is fully polished and hand sharpened to a bone-splitting, shield shattering edge. It comes with a robust 10" cutting surface that terminates in two sharp horns or points. Traditionally, the longer top point was used for stabbing, gouging, or parrying, while the slightly shorter bottom point was used to capture an opponent's shield or to hook and immobilize his neck, arms, or legs.

To maximize leverage, strength, and dexterity of movement, the Viking Axe is equipped with a very strong, resilient haft. Made in Maine from the best hickory available, it enhances and amplifies our Viking Axe's lethal potential as a cutting, chopping and stabbing weapon.

A Mighty Axe!
Finally, an axe that's my size! I feared that the handle would be somewhat slender, but that fear was laid to rest as soon as I pulled it out of the box. Some dislike the varnish, but I find it both attractive and practical, as it provides a very slip resistant grip. As for the axe head, it gleams beautifully in the light and has a great weight to it. I have seen others complaining that the eye is too thick and adds unneccesary weight. I, on the other hand, see the potential devastation it could cause when used as a hammer. The very broad, graceful edge is sharp...for an axe at least. I can rub my fingers up and down the edge without so much as a scratch, but it's sharp enough to cleave through whatever is unfortunate enough to be in it's path. The points, however, are sharp enough to punch through plate armor...I mean, sheet metal with minimal effort. Assembly was fairly easy, even though mine came without instructions somehow. Once completed, I was in awe at how mighty this axe feels in my hands. My only complaint is, like many others have found, that the screw really detracts from the overall aesthetics and I found to be redundant. The tapered haft, once hammered in firmly, held well enough on its own. I would have preferred a steel or brass pin instead, but, for the price, this is easily forgiven. I plan to hide it with a leather cross strap anyway, so I can't complain. Overall, I am happy with my new axe and can't wait to test its might against some proper targets.

Nice reproduction except...
This is the best mass produced reproduction I have seen. The head is carbon steel. It has a nice finish and it appears to be forged. Unfortunately the head is made to be mounted to the haft with screws which really detracts from looks of the axe. The haft is tapered. It would be nice if the eye of the axe head was tapered so it could be mounted to the haft like the originals were. The haft is either stained or flame hardened and is varnished. I will be stripping the finish because I don't like the looks of it.

Its Cold !
Cold Steel Viking Axe. Long Handle was kind of plasticy and thick.. Stripped handle ,squared it down a bit and it now fits my hands. great quality and very sharp.. A bit heavy on the head but I stopped raiding England 1100 years ago. Another great Cold Steel/Knife Center product and deal ! Wade M
