Amazing for Kitchen Knives
NH Guy was right about pocket knives and thicker knives. There is a 2 cm gap from the top of the handle to where the sharpener touches. The guides are too narrow for thicker knives. I'll add the comment that it takes a fair amount of metal off the knife when you use stages 1 and 2. But.... For kitchen knives, this is amazing. It puts an edge on a knife in a few minutes that would take me an hour to sharpen with my Spyderco Sharpmaker. I have an old junk knife in my tool box for scaping off gasket material. After a couple of minutes in the Chef's choice, it is as sharp as the Benchmade I worked on for an hour.

Chef's Choice, not sportsmans choice!
It does alright on flat side kitchen knives but is no good on thicker sporting knives especially if the blade is not a full flat grind. Also is not good for pocket knives as it can not get all of the blade. It can't hit the bottom 1/2 inch blade. I was going to return it but it's a quick touch up for my kitchen knives. For everything else I bought a 1" by 30" belt sander.
