Description
EX130RAO: RAO Heavy Duty Folder
Extrema Ratio

June 2006, the “185° Rgt. Ricognizione ed Acquisizione Obiettivi” (Target Acquisition Regiment) airborne “FOLGORE” (185° RAO) commissioned Extrema Ratio with developing a special knife based on specifications concerning their special duties.

The 185° RAO, is the only unit in the Italian Armed Forces in charge of long range recons and to acquire several kind of targets to be engaged with artillery, helicopters, aircraft and battleships suppression fire, across all the possible theatres during armed force, interforce and multinational force operations. A very delicate and dangerous duty, operated by detachments capable to penetrate, operate and survive in hostile surroundings thanks to a two years very hard training.

The motto of this special operation regiment is: “VIDERE NEC VIDERI”, from Latin: “SEE WITHOUT BEING SEEN”.

The result is the knife called RAO, a survival knife, not a big folder but a compact field knife with a strong and heavy blade and a very safe locking system, assisted by an extra safe device that turn the folder in a real fix blade knife. The blade opening and closing are acting with both the hands together to minimize the risk of self injuries.

The blade, because of it's weight, is a real guillotine. The extra safe device is a steel pin to be hand screwed through two holes placed by the guard zone of the massive anticorodal aluminum alloy handle. This device is necessary because of the violence of the chopping performances expressed this uncommon folder.

The presence of this concrete pin between the blade and the user hands is a great psychological assistance to chop strongly and quickly.

The sheath is an essential part of the system. It contains a diamond sharpener and allows the user to carry the knife in open condition, held by a two clip provided lace or in close condition inside the front pocket. The sheath can be attached to almost any combat jacket or standard belts thanks to the M.O.L.L.E. system.

Extrema Ratio RAO
To start this off: I absolutely love this knife. This is a knife is great to have on your backpack while hiking or camping and even though its a monster, I use it for EDC. The N690 steel is my overall favorite due to the fact that it is easy to sharpen, it's a stainless steel, and it has great edge retention. The handle, though its Anticorodal - basically aluminum, is a lot tougher than one would think It has stood up to intense heat, freezing cold, and it may flex a bit but has never bent any under pressure and the coating on it is a really nice non-slip material that works better as it gets wet. The tip of this knife is a tanto but not the normal westernized tanto as it is "snubbed" in comparison to other knives, but it still hold true to the fact that the tanto is extremely stong. The sheath for the knife can be used optionally since this is a folding knife but the cool thing is that it offers means to carry the knife as either open in locked position or folded and the sheath can attach to a MOLLE system as well as be carried on a belt. Seeing as how this knife weighs a lot and is extremely big for a folder I do suggest that one should put it in the sheath and attach it to a backpack or tactical vest instead of carrying it in your pocket. Also i suggest putting some blue loctite on the screw to keep it from coming loose, i did this about a week after i got the knife and i havent had to make an adjustment since, and ive owned this knife for over a year now. Extras: 1. Knife has a lifetime warranty - If it breaks you just pay the cost of shipping to send it to Extrema Ratio. 2. Knife comes in box with a diamond sharpener. My only complaint: THERE IS NO POCKET CLIP.
