Brightest Flashlight in its class, with a hidden cost
The $229.00 Fenix TK70 generates more light than any other flashlight in its class, even slightly outperforming the excellent Olight SR90 which can be had for around $379.00 new on Amazon. Build quality is superb and performance doesn't get any better but there is a definitely a catch regarding this seemingly too good to be true price to output ratio. In order for this flashlight to produce the rated maximum output you'll need to invest in at least 4 high performance rechargeable NIMH "D" cell batteries and a compatible charger. Off of the shelf Duracell Alkalines do not produce enough output to run the TK70 at its top rated 2200 lumen "Turbo" mode so within a second or two of enabling "Turbo" mode the flashlight will drop down to the 900 lumen output mode. The only time I've ever been disappointed to see a "measly" 900 lumens of light from a flashlight was the first time I turned on my TK70 with 4 Duracell Alkalines installed. I was able to get about a 2 second glimpse of turbo output before output dropped to 900 lumens. After factoring in the cost of 8 high end recharceable NIMH "D" cell batteries and a matching battery charger, I ended up spending almost another $200.00, bringing my total price up to a whopping $429.00. No doubt I could have saved money by shopping around for the batteries and charger but if you buy this flashlight you should realistically expect to spend close to another $100 or so for 8 high quality rechargeable "D" cell batteries and a charger. Also, before you buy spend money on the rechargeable NIMH D cells commonly sold at Lowes and Home Depot you may want to check out a Batteries Plus store and ask the sales clerk what differentiates the quality of rechargeable NIMH batteries. The rechargeable D Cells made by Energizer are definitely on the lower end of the quality scale vs. other options. With the correct batteries installed the Fenix TK70 is a truely awesome light cannon that you have to see to believe.
