good knife bad sheath
I have a number of mkii a 1980, 1991 commandii and this version. This one is not bad. Handle is exactly the same. Steel is this 420hc, jury is not out on the steel, probably not as good as 440c like the old ones, but no evidence other than composition to go by (.6% carbon versus 1% in 440, chromium about the same) serration arn't as bad as some have said, grind is ok point sharpness great. The real weakness is not the knife but the totally crappy chinese sheath, looks cheep, feels cheep and is cheep, my snap fell off immediatly, Gerber really fumbled on this sheath, it cheepens the whole knife.

Good Knife Crappy Sheath
This knife is actually pretty good, I have some older ones one from 1980 and one from the early 90's and I would prefer to have it still made from 440C like the oldies, or even better from S30V like the 2011 limited edition Command II, that is a great knife. But for the value the knife is ok and will serve its intended function as a stabbing combat knife. Even the old ones were not great in the slashing department and this one follows suit. That makes the serrations a valuable addition. Although the knife is good, the sheath really sucks, it is made in China and like almost everything from China it should go right out of the box and straight to the landfill. It is made or lightweight cordura not the heavy duty stuff used on Gerber sheaths in the 80's and 90's. The button on mine fell off almost immediately, The design is ok if it was built like a spec ops sheath but its not. It is nice having the Molle compatibility, but overall the sheath is a big fail. Luckily you can get a leather replacement on eBay. Buy it for the knife and find a new sheath!
