Cons: Overall Quality, Lock Type, Handle Feel, Weight
A heavy duty knife with some surprising weak points
Another is a series of 5 minute reviews by Jim, so called because they're only 5 minutes of reading for you (but obviously I put in a heck of a lot more time to create it). Make: Gerber Model: 06 Tanto (G10 Handle) Price Paid: $160 First Thoughts... Initial Impressions: Huge. Beefy knife, in every sense of the word; handles, blade, deploy button and lock slide switch are large. Made to emulate a 'tactical' knife, but it's more looks then anything in this case. Packaging: Above average. Box is sized quite well to the knife. Silkscreened company logo and name on almost every side, with a serial number tag on the back. Accessories: Padded nylon pouch with belt loop that snaps closed. Documentation: Double sided sheet that has open/close instructions on one side and warranty information on the other. Observed Quality: Mostly good. The blade anchoring point leaves something to be desired, but almost everything else is alright. Blade... Sharpness: Blade, very good. Serrations, very poor. Slicing printer paper was no challenge for the edge of the blade, but the serrations were as dull as a politician during campaign season. Speed of Deployment: Slow. The blade just kind of meanders out, without any sense of urgency. About 1 in 10 times it didn't fully deploy and didn't locked into place. Solidity of Lockup: Very good. Downward pressure on the blade resulted in almost no movement whatsoever. Blade Wobble When Deployed: Terrible. This thing wiggles more than a salsa dancer. In a full-on tactical situation I would not want to rely on this knife. Handle... Feel: Solid. No flex, no bend, no weakness. The aggressive dimple pattern would irritate your skin if used for long periods of time, but the flip side to that is in the wet or cold the Gerber 06 will probably never fall out of your hand. Size: Large. This is a robust knife that won't get lost in your hand even when wearing gloves. An EDC knife it's not, unless you're the type of person who isn't concerned about being obvious. Impressions: T shaped handle provides a big index finger choil and thumb ramp, so choking up for detail work will never be a problem. G10 is pretty hard to begin with, but add the somewhat abrasive pattern and you have a knife only a gloved hand will like. Jimping is about perfect, in both feel and location on the handle. Convenience... Clip Strength: Very good. Strong and taunt, yet not overly so. It did prove a bit difficult to get over the seam of my jeans pocket, but it might get better with time. You'd be hard pressed to lose it, that's for sure. It's held on by 3 screws so the clip isn't going anywhere. Carry Options: Tip up, left or right. Overall... Value: Passable. Almost everything about this knife screams stout. Almost. Buy Again: Doubtful. It's too large for me and the blade wobble is concerning. Overall Assessment: There's no question who Gerber was targeting with this knife, but they missed the mark in my opinion. I would not feel comfortable calling a knife "tactical" when the blade moves around this much. The rest of the knife fits the bill - feeling hefty and stout - but I sure wouldn't want to stake my life on this thing.

Rock solid action and feel. Hard to believe there could be a better knife. Very sharp right out of the box. Comes with a sheath.

gerber 06 auto
Well built USA craftsmanship. Fast opening, rugged, sharp. Would prefer it without serrated. Would like the lock switch to unlock in the opposite direction. Overall an awesome knife
