No nonsense knife with aggresive handle scales
Another is a series of 5 minute reviews by Jim, so called because they're only 5 minutes of reading for you (but obviously I put in a heck of a lot more time to create it). Make: Gerber Model: Propel Downrange Price Paid: $150 First Thoughts... Initial Impressions: Serious. This one seems to be aimed at the person who relies on their knife extensively. Packaging: Thin walled box with nothing protecting the knife itself (plastic bag, foam sleeve, etc). Accessories: None. Documentation: None. Observed Quality: Very good. Other then the blade being covered in some type of slimy film, and one serration having a slight ding, there was nothing observed. Blade... Sharpness: Very. Not exactly razor sharp, so it will require some additional work, but it is at least usable out of the box. Speed of Deployment: Quick. The blade deploys like it means business. Solidity of Lockup: Very good. The blade locks into place with authority, and feels secure once there. Blade Wobble When Deployed: Almost nothing. If you're picky like me you might find some movement, but realistically there's none to speak of. Handle... Feel: Somewhat aggressive. G10 is a good choice, and I like the material, but Gerber put an awful lot of texture into this handle. For short term use I was alright with that, especially when it was wet outside, but it did tend to irritate after a while. Size: Close to perfect, for me anyway. It's long enough to fit my hand comfortably, yet almost slim enough to be used as an EDC knife. Impressions: There's a slight index finger choil and thumb ramp, both of which work fine for me. The texture Gerber opted to use is a bit much, and the squared off pommel/lanyard hole creates a terrible hot spot after awhile. Fix those two issues and the handle becomes just about ideal. Convenience... Clip Strength: Excellent. The spring steel used by Gerber has good tension, yet isn't obnoxiously tight. It's not the thickest clip I've ever seen though. Carry Options: Tip up and down for the right side, tip up for the left. Overall... Value: Very good. This is a lot of knife for the money. Buy Again: Most likely. Overall Assessment: The Gerber Propel Downrange is almost the perfect EDC knife for me. The locking mechanism is rock solid, the blade has no movement and the knife feels almost indestructible. Unfortunately the G10 handle has a little too much texture for my liking. Couple that with the hot spots created by the 90 degree edge on the pommel and back of the handles, and you end up with a knife that is thisclose to being perfect.

Excellent Auto
I previously purchased a Benchmade Auto, but this Gerber gets more use. Premium steel, full auto opening, grippy G-10 handle, fairly light for it's size and opening mechanism, and made in America. I would buy a second one in case it breaks, but Gerber would probably fix it.

Trimming the fat off the 06
The first thing that I noticed after opening the box on the Downrange auto was how much thinner it is than the 06. The second thing was how much grip the G10 handles provide, the best way to explain it is to picture your knife handles dipped in Linex spray on bed liner. I’ve had the knife for about a month now and carry it daily and task it is perfectly suited for. Excellent low profile carry with only the glass brake exposed (showing) out of your pocket. The safety and firing buttons operate smoothly with little effort. The deployment of the blade is faster than the 06, but I believe it could be even faster. Overall I give the Downrange Auto an -A, Gerber clearly improved over the 06 and seems to have a good understanding of what the Military/Law enforcement customer wants out of a daily carry.
