cool beans
Only thing stopping me from giving it a five is the fact that this one doesn't have the finger guard, even though once held tight its not really necessary but still.

i have an orange blade
i grew up with the old puma folders for the everyday hunting knives. being a chef i have grown to appreciate the particular knife for the particular job. especially in the field. this is a very nice skinner if you have the time and skill. remember it is just a belt knife. i have several brous blades and would recommend them to any knife user who is beyond the novice stage. if you are new then i recommend having someone along on the hunt who can help AND knows first aide. just sayin.

Good but not great.
First things first: the Silent Solider series is very cool; Jason Brous is awesome. I have been playing with this Ranger V1 w/ black cerakote for a week now. The Ranger V2 with finger guard and spine jimping seems like the better buy. I found it really hard to get a secure grip on the Ranger V1. It is "slippery". The best grip i found was to use it like a push dagger with my middle finger through the hole closest to the blade, with cutting edge facing the direction of my pinky. Although in any grip, my biggest concern was sliding forward onto the cutting edge. The more recent SS versions with the finger guard inspire more confidence. The Ranger V1 has no jimping. I really like the fact that the newer SS designs have the aggressive spine jimping BUT i think it might be better if a less aggressive jimping were also applied to the entire outside edge of the "handle" area: that way any grip you chose would have traction for your hand or fingers. The black cerakote is a welcome feature to minimize the maintenance on the D2 steel. But after one week of sheathing and unsheathing, the kydex that makes contact with the blade has burnished a squiggly line into the cerakote. It does not look good. Like i said, i think the SS series is very cool. So i'm going to keep the Ranger V1. But i will make my own mods to enhance its usefulness for me. Your Milage May Vary.
