KA5603: Johnson Adventure Parangatang
This machete is part of the KA-BAR/Johnson Adventure line-up of knives. Built in the parang-style, the blade makes for a great choice for more intense chopping tasks, as the style was originally developed to deal with the woodier vegetation of Southeast Asia.

The 14-1/8" blade is made from 1095 Cro-Van steel with a flat grind and an edge angle of 20 degrees. The blade comes extremely sharp right out of the box... trust me. The Adventuregrip handle is made up of two textured Zytel scales, which provide great grip and hand feel. The length of the handle also allows for a couple of different grips depending on your current task. Weighing in at just less than 21 ounces, the Parangatang feels nicely balanced and should make for a comfortable item to carry and utilize in the field. We really like how the slim blade doesn't compromise mobility with unnecessary broadness. It's made in the USA and comes with a MOLLE compatible sheath. Overall, the KA-BAR Parangatang is an impressively balanced offering. It should make an ideal companion out in the field.

1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel (it will rust) and most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.
Zytel Handles

A nylon polymer that is lightweight and extremely durable, Zytel can be shaped and textured to provide excellent grip.

A cut above
First off im very impressed with the 1095 cro-van steel that Kabar uses on the Becker line of knives. Edge retention is outstanding and I was able to get a great polish on the edge using 2000 grit wet sandpaper. I absolutely love this knife, however i must say that the sheath SUCKS BIG TIME!!! I have since made a few kydex sheaths, I say a few because i ended up buying 2 more parangatangs. Yes thats how great of a chopper this Machete is period. I was a little sceptical of the handles geometry at first and had plants on reshaping it by removing the spur, well I'm glad i didn't because I learned that it gave me a tremendous power stroke going from a full grip to a 3 finger grip, kind of like releasing a trigger if you will. So again, the shape and geometry of the handle is great, I'll have to say that the scales suck! They dont suck big time like the sheath, but the plastic scales give this great blade a cheap feel and almost makes it embarrassing to bring it out among my knife culture group. Well with that said I crafted up a few set of wood scales out of leopard wood and the beauty of this machete along with the sheath is now my personal pride. So in conclusion the Parangatang needed a few things addressed, mainly the sheath, however for the price it is a excellent value compared to other knives I've already tested in my search of a Holly Grail woodsman blade such as the Cold Steel sk5 kukri, Ontario kukri (was my favorite), Becker bk21, Tops Armageddon and a bunch of other machete's and large choppers, only knife center knows how much I've spent in search of my Grail woodsman's blade, lol... This is it for me. (for now anyhow, cos I'm always in search, lol)

Why 1095??????
Why did Kabar use 1095 for this long hacking blade, look 1095 is a default steel for many companies because it does one thing well, holds an edge! Most people don't know how to sharpen a knife and so 1095 will keep the factory edge forever, but it is a terrible steel if you plan to actual seriously use your knife, as it is not tough. It is very hard and brittle. I just finished restoring my friends 20 year old blackjack halo made of 1095, it was rusted and pitted, had chips all along the edge and the tip was broken. If you use your knife to the max get something a little tougher, D2 A2 1075 anything but 1095, it rusts like crazy and breaks. And for this length blade 1075 or 1050 with a spring temper would be a better option!

Excellent Bargain
Excellent machete for a great price. The steel is great for both light and heavy work. I use this machete for bush wacking in the Pacific north west and splitting larger firewood into kindling. It can take a razor sharp edge, it comes with one out of the box. The black texture coating on the blade shows no sign of wearing off after a year of work. The only draw back is the handle. It's a pretty good design but is too thin and small for my hands. I am happy they made the handle removable, this allowed me to make my own. I went with a micarta wrap that mimics the Condor golok. The sheath is functional but needs improvement. After all is said, if you can make your own handle and sheath, this machete will be perfect. The actual blade/steel has proven it's worth and is a bargain for the price. 4 stars because of the handle and sheath.
