KS1560: Whirlwind
Kershaw Knives

Get your hands on a Whirlwind and you won’t want to let go. This one will be your constant companion whether you’re on the jobsite, working in the garage, or doing chores around the house. The first thing you’ll notice is how this big handful of a knife nestles into your palm.

The ergonomic design and the tough, glass-filled nylon handle scales provide a grip that's comfortable, secure, and ensures that you’re always in control of the cut. Next, of course, you’ll want to try out the razor-sharp blade. Just push on the thumbstud and—twack!—the SpeedSafe assisted opening mechanism moves the blade out of the handle and it locks securely into place, ready for use.

The blade is a classic drop-point, perfect for handling a wide range of tasks—pretty much anything you care to throw at it. The blade steel is high-performance 14C28N. Developed in a partnership between Kershaw and Sandvik Steel, it offers excellent corrosion resistance, hardness, and edge retention. In fact, Sandvik considers this the highest-performance steel available that can still be fine-blanked. We would have to agree. But the only way you’re going to know for yourself is to get a Whirlwind of your own.

Kershaw Whirlwind
I bought this knife to replace a Kershaw Leek, which I lost. I go camping twice a year and I wanted to replace the Leek (a fine knife) with something a little bigger. The Whirlwind appears well made and is sharp, but I won't be using it for its intended purpose (general light camp duty) till spring, I don't really know how it will hold up or if it will keep an edge. The one thing I don't care for is the handle. I'm sure it's strong enough, but the scales appear to be hollow and it just makes the knife feel cheap. For the money it was a good deal. We'll see how it holds up.

Great pocket knife
I carry this knife in my jeans for anything that needs cutting. The blade is plenty sharp and the handle/grip is positive. I like the assist-opening - the blade jumps out quick and ready-to-use.

Fabulous tool
This has been my main carry knife for around five years, and I absolutely love it and recommend it. I carry it in my right jeans pocket (I am right handed) and despite a lot of abuse, the knife is as solid today as when I got it- just a few scratches and normal wear, which don't begin to affect operation. One thing I love is the lock mechanism. It opens in a flash, one-handed, and I have found it fairly easy to close it one-handed too, as long as one is careful in doing it. This means that I can get the knife out, use it, and put it away again all while my left hand/arm is engaged elsewhere, which is a surprisingly useful feature, though I admit that many high end knives are capable of this. I read one disparaging comment about the clip getting weaker over time... This happened to me once after I accidentally bent it too far outward, and it no longer provided tension against the knife handle. However, it was easy to fix, as I simply unscrewed the clip (very easy to do), bent it back by hand to its proper shape, and screwed it back in place. A 2-minute fix for a problem of abuse. Otherwise an occasional sharpening, cleaning and oiling - perhaps once a year or so, depending on use - will keep this tool in active service for a very very long time.
