KS3200: 3200 Ripcord
Kershaw Knives

The Ripcord's patented design provides the strength and stability of a fixed blade knife, yet stores as compactly as a folding knife. The key is Kershaw's Out the Front (OTF) design. With OTF, the blade slides out the front of the handle into a secure, fixed-blade position.

A high-impact Kydex belt sheath doubles as the OTF deployment/blade-locking system. To open the knife, grasp the handle and pull up. As the knife reaches the end of its travel, tilt it slightly forward to disengage the blade-locking stud from the beveled circular recess. In the fixed position, the Ripcord’s blade is secure and cannot be retracted without the sheath. To return the knife to the sheath, insert the tip of the knife into the Kydex® sheath and lower the blade into the sheath until the beveled circular recess in the knife lines up with the stud. Tilt the knife toward the stud to engage the mechanism and slide the Ripcord into its sheath. The blade clicks securely into place, enabling your to carry the Ripcord tip-up or tip-down.

The Sandvik 14C28N blade offers strength and superior edge retention, while the DLC coating enhances performance and looks good doing it. The Ripcord's handle is lightweight anodized aluminum with Trac-Tec inserts for a secure grip.
  • Liner Lock: Locks the blade open during use; one side of the knife’s steel "liner," the steel plate to which the handle scales are attached, moves into position behind the blade to securely lock it open.
  • Kydex Sheath: This knife comes with a storage and/or carrying sheath.
  • Tip-up/tip-down belt carry

Pros: Handle Material, Blade Sharpness, Handle Feel, Blade Material, None
Cons: Pocket Clip, Sheath, Ease of Opening, Weight, Lock Ease of Use
Good idea, bad execution
There are a few specific reasons to have a knife like this and past that, there will always be a better option. An out the front design that requires a sheath is only needed where space is limited and a compact size is needed, otherwise a fixed blade is easier to deploy and most likely stronger. The design fails immediately because when mounted with the belt clip it sticks out over an inch and tends to catch on things. It is like wearing a little brick on your belt. The sheath clip is heavy, will not mount easily to a MOLLE system, pack, vest, or harness strap (unless they are thin), and the whole thing rattles. While the handle is contained, its stored profile does not allow for a grip on the handle while deploying. You have to use 2-3 fingers to pull it out and the grip the handle to get it off the deploying knob. This isn't easy with gloves or in a cold/wet situation. When pulling the knife out of the sheath and deploying the blade, the knife does not smoothly come off the knob and has to be lifted slightly to get it to release. It usually doesn't matter how long it takes to resheath a knife but deploying it should be smooth and simple. Not the case here. I ended up removing the belt clip and mounting the sheath under the steering post on a rescue craft. The knife itself is good, but you have to put up with a bad deployment system to use it.

Pros: Ease of Opening, Blade Sharpness, Sheath, Overall Quality
Cons: None
Slight modification
I drilled out a couple of the holes and wear it parallel to the ground left side. With a slight pull outwards you can draw this in a split second.
