1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel, most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.

Pros: Finish, Blade Material, Weight, Materials, None
Cons: Overall Quality, Blade Sharpness
Axe alternative
Understand that this is not a standard machete, in the same way that a sledge hammer is not a standard hammer. The weight and length of the blade allow it to perform tasks that would usually be handled with an axe, but makes it difficult to swing fast enough to cut lite, unsupported, material. I got mine in 2009 to fill the gap between my favourite machete (Collins and legitimus 323 with clipped tip and custom delrin handle) and my axe. It came with a rough edge, and offset edge for about 3" of the tip. Took about 20 minutes to fix and adequately sharpen the edge, and has only required light touch ups since. This is the only good tool I will let my brother (who's managed to break about every tool he's owned, including an anvil) due to the cost to replace and my beliefs that it is impossible to damage beyond repair without intentionally trying to destroy it. What to expect : Be ready to sharpen it on arrival. Have a file, grinder(fine wheel), or belt sander at the ready. You can refine the edge later with a sharpener if you want, but doesn't need it. The handle is there to hold on to, not to look nice. It will have flow lines, splay, etc. that have no impact on its performance. The finish is rough and will pick up marks as well as a chalk board. Do not panic, you can wash them off.

Best machete that I have ever owned!!
I love this machete. Every since I got mine about 2 years ago, I don't go into the woods or a survival expedition without it!, Once sharpened, It is very sharp, holds and edge, Has very little slag in the steel, making it extremely flexible without being brittle. This machete is capable of felling trees 20 inches thick in my experience, and eve better than my double sided axe on top of that! Handle is a bit crude, and is very hard, but its fastened on there well, hasn't busted on me yet, and I have a feeling that this knife will last me a lifetime! 10 out of 10!
