ON8871: RAT-1A Assisted Opener, Black
Ontario Knife Company
Ontario Knife Company is proud to introduce one of their all-time best selling folding knives, now reissued as assisted openers with their proprietary Tactical Assisted Opening (T.A.O.) technology and G10 handles. This knife has been a long time in the making since the original model was introduced in 2007. The RAT-1 is one of those knives every knife collector should have in their collection, at least at one point. The production quality for the money is absolutely second to none and these knives are built extremely solidly so you can use them for even the toughest tasks. Now, after almost seven years, Ontario has engineered this folding knife for those who prefer an assisted opening blade. They've also improved upon the design by using real G10 for the handles instead of FRN for a better grip under extreme conditions and added a locking mechanism for safety.

Well I was right and I was right. The assisted opening has loosened up and is much easier to use now. Enough to warrant this system over the unassisted Rat 1? That's debatable. The sliding safety crapped out and would move on and off safe by just tilting the knife up or down. A dab of superglue on the safety in the "off" position has fixed that problem. Still, a good knife with some notable problems.

Pros: Handle Material, Overall Quality, None
Cons: Ease of Opening
Good but not great
I feel too much resistance in thumb stud when deploying. I like the safety but ease of sliding it on/off is inconsistent and sometimes sticks. I oiled switch inside and out. No improvement. I don't use the safety now because of this flaw. Knife needs refinements.

A very good knife marred by one problem . . .
This knife has much to like: the size and shape of the handle; the functional blade shape that is just the right size for an EDC; and an excellent liner lock. The problem? The geometry for the assist opening. My hands are a bit larger than most -- I wear a size 8 1/2 hospital glove; a Spyderco Endura fits just right, but a Benchmade Griptillian is small -- and even though I have good hand strength the blade is hard to open one handed. The stud is too high up, too close to the axle with too much blade below to be able to thumb it open to the point that the assist kicks in. I can't imagine what the designers were thinking when they made this knife.
