A Beast!
The first thing that you'll probably notice on picking up this knife for the first time is that it is one impressive piece of metal. With a blade that is 1/4 of an inch think the weight is not insubstantial - could be an issue if arm strength (the lack of it) is an issue or if the knife is used for an extended period. On the plus side the Ranger Series RD6 Ready Detachment feels pretty much indestructible. In fact you may be tempted to use it as a pry bar - don't, get a pry bar for that. The G-10 handles provide a positive, secure grip. I'm becoming a fan of this handle material, have to see how it stands up to heavy use though. The sheath, as others have noted is a notch or two below what you would expect with a knife of this quality. Its not bad, just merely ok - it does the job. One thing Ontario could to to kick the quality up quickly and easily is replace the top velcro handle loop with a snap fastener - that would be a huge improvement.

Great knife!
I like the Ranger RD6. It's not a swamp rat, but it's close. For the price, it doesn't have to be. I use this knife for general outdoors type uses, but have tried it out in the kitchen and it works fine in either place. I have the custom kydex sheath for mine and I highly recommend it. For one, the provided sheath is about 2 inches too long. Secondly, it does not have a good retention system. The velcro is just not my idea of security. The handle is a bit blockish, but I have small hands so that could be why I feel this way. The full height grid is awesome. The knife came out of the box shaving hair and slicing paper. With the geometry, it has potential to be even sharper. For such a thick blade, it has a very sharp point as well. The knife blade is actually 6 3/4 inches long from the top of the handle slab to the tip. It is handle heavy, thus making it very fast in the hand. I can drop my grip down a bit and gain extra chopping power. The coating is good for those who like coatings. With 5160 it's almost needed for rust prevention. I would still prefer a naked blade though. Overall, a wise purchase. I am sure it will never let me down as long as I don't try to destroy it. There is a youtube video of a guy chopping a concrete block with an RD7 and the knife got dull, but never broke!
