Great buy
I bought this knife for camp use and for cutting through brush while working (I'm a forester). The knife comes with a thin edge from the factory that cuts very well. The edge did roll a TINY bit when chopping, but overall the blade design and steel are great for chopping. I resharpened it to my typical edge angles (slightly thicker than factory) and the edge doesn't roll or chip. The 5160 is great; it'll still shave after cutting a couple of small trees. The blade is thick at 1/4", but the full grind creates a blade that is still thin enough to work well for general cutting tasks. I like micarta for handles, but as it comes from the factory the handle is very blocky. There is a minimal amount of rounding on the micarta. A lot of people view this as a big drawback as it can be uncomfortable to chop with this knife. However, I think it's great that Ontario leaves a lot of material on the scales. This allows you to file/grind/sand away the grips where you want to until you get the perfect handle shape for your own hand. Overall fit and finish is pretty good. The blade was ground about as even as you can expect, but the edge wasn't sharpened perfectly; whoever sharpened mine took a tiny bit too much material off of the belly area creating a very slight recurve. This is no big deal in actual use. The powder coated finish on mine hasn't chipped or worn away prematurely so I think it's pretty good. A lot of people gripe about the sheath. I personally haven't had a single problem with the retention strap and I think the sheath is a good design. There's enough space in the pouch for a fire steel, some tinder, and a small sharpening stone. You could easily put a small fixed blade in there for a good small/large blade combo. The only thing I didn't like was the blade can move around in the plastic liner which eventually created a dull spot on the edge where the blade starts curving to the tip. I fixed this by taking out the factory liner and making my own out of kydex. I shaped the kydex so it would pinch the blade an not allow the blade to move around when sheathed. You can't expect any manufacturer to make a sheath of this type where the blade doesn't rattle around. Compared to other knives of this type (Busse Steel Heart, Swamp Rat Camp Tramp, Ontario RAT, Fallkniven A2, etc) I'd say this knife is at the top of the list of full production affordable knives. It's not as nice as the Busses and Swamp Rats but it easily beats the others in design and performance. The Fallkniven does have better steel with their san mai though. When you factor in the price I think it's a clear winner. You get 95% of the performance and quality of a Busse at 25% of the price.
