Pros: Materials, Overall Quality, Sheath/Scabbard, Finish, Handle Material, Blade Material, Blade Sharpness
Cons: Weight, None
Good steel, handles need work - and that's good
The blade itself is great. It makes for a compact, heavy yet nimble package. Chopping, baton, digging, bring it on. Other knives are better at these tasks, but for the size the Afghan has much going for it. The handles are coarse Micarta (canvas?) which is gives good friction while wet, cold and/or with gloves. But the handles was made by a redneck with a hacksaw. Full of sharp lines and corners it was like holding a brick. Then one day I went to town with a pocketknife and sandpaper. Took a couple of hours, now this is something I can use. Sits good in hand, the choil and thumb space are usable and chopping is improved. Don't know if Ontario went with the hacksaw to cut costs, but I welcome more knives like this: we give you the blade and you personalize the handles yourself. The sheath is nylon, probably not the best quality, but mine came with two straps with buttons. No Velcro in sight. And I find it to work quite well in my not-too-demanding environment.

Made in the U.S.A. ?
Blade grind is uneven. Handles are not contoured flush with tang and have sharp edges. If I'd seen this knife first, I would've walked away. I expected a higher quality blade from O.K.C.

BK2 or ranger afghan 5 inch?
Ranger wins by miles ahead. Why? (I bought both knife at same time) Ranger $80, BK2 $70 but plus the micarta handle +$45 = $115 $80 vs $115, $35 extra for BK2 The micarta handle wont even fit the BK2 properly, shocking workmanship, the aftermarket upgrade handle wont fit flush, very dissappointing. Waste of $45 Ranger, however, comes with perfect fit flush micarta handle, it felt so much more comfortable in the hand than BK2, ranger has a thumb grove, makes cutting motion alot more smooth than BK2, both same thickness, blade length BK2 is about 5mm longer, handle bit longer, but the ranger feels better BK2's sheath, is so hard to pull the knife out, extremely tight, Ranger sheath, awsome, lightweight, easy to pull out, molle, thus, ranger 5 stars, BK2 3 stars
