Pros: Blade Material, Finish, Handle Material, Weight, Blade Sharpness, Overall Quality, None
Ontario Ranger Series knives will never disappoint.
I am more of a collector than a user, but for either purpose, Ontario Ranger Series knives are among the best ones available, in my opinion, and at a reasonable price. Again, considering that relatively low cost, the only other manufacturer that offers really good products in this price range is Condor (once more, my opinion). The Ranger Series would probably outperform Condor (based on the Youtube demos I have seen), but Condor knives are real bargains. This particular Ranger model is 1/4 inch thick 5160 spring steel, which is (again my opinion, which is based on the research I have been able to do) superior to 1095--not by much probably, but superior nonetheless. Every Ranger knife I have has nearly perfect fit and finish, and came quite sharp. If I wanted to find any fault with Ontario knives, it would probably be the matter of their sheaths. They are made of heavy duty nylon material and well-constructed, but personally I like leather. I suppose the idea of these fabric sheaths (which most knife makers have gone to) is to keep costs down. That makes sense--I would rather have a great knife in a so-so sheath than the other way around. I would say this: if you want a strong, virtually unbreakable, knife that will stand up to anything it is put to, you want Ontario Ranger knives.
