Ontario Knife Company
Whether it is the RAT or our TAK Series knives, you can rest assured these knives will stand the test of durability. The RAT line bridges the gap between economy, toughness, and real-world features. These knives are designed in the field and built to be used in the field. No bells and whistles, just straight forward cutlery that works, whether it's in the middle of a jungle or the blazing sun of the desert. RAT knives are used and carried by outdoorsmen and military professionals worldwide, including U.S. Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for its extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel, most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.

Pros: Overall Quality, Sheath/Scabbard, Handle Material, Blade Material
Cons: None
Very pleased
I borrowed this knife on a weekend and oh boy it was good, i was batoning wood every day with it and it held an edge very well and the blade didn't wiggle anything at all. The coating is good because it keeps the blade from rusting but the coating will of course wear off eventually but i suppose all coatings do that. Sheath is also better than the sheath from an older RAT-7 i own so thumbs up for that. Ain't much else to tell since i only had it for 3 days.

When my brother sent me this knife for a b day present, i was amazed at everything about it , hands down. As a Marine i hold high standards for a blade, and now living primitive off and on for six years, I know the rat-5 takes the friggin cake.

I have purchased (4) Ontario rat 5s for bug-out-bags. I bought (3) rat 3S and I carry the rat 3 all over. I love the durability of the 1095 carbon steel. I really appreciate the way it takes an edge and I love the micarta handle. You could pay more for other knives. At this point, I wouldn't be comfortable experimenting like that.
