OP12: N012 Folding Knife, Carbon Steel
Quite possibly the greatest camping knife on the market for the last 120 years! The Opinel N012 is incredibly durable and lightweight. The wood handle does not transfer heat or cold to the hand. Stabilized beechwood is ultra resistant and comfortably contoured to fit the hand. The blade is made from X90 Carbon steel, with a high carbon content, which is what makes it possible to achieve the excellent hardness after heat treatment, guaranteeing the strength of the cutting edge, resistance to wear and easy of sharpening. The hardness obtained after heat treatment are theoretically slightly greater in steels that do not contain chrome. The cutting strength is therefore better with a carbon steel knife and sharpening is much easier than a stainless steel blades which contain chrome. However, carbon has a low resistance to corrosion caused by moisture, which means that certain precautionary measures are necessary when using and storing a carbon knives: we recommend that you avoid damp environments and that you dry the blade after each use. This is a very large knife - please review its size before considering it.
  • This knife features the Virobloc Safety ring. The Virobloc safety ring was invented and implemented in 1955. This simple yet effective locking system greatly improved the original knife. The ability to help prevent the blade from opening when closed was added to the Virobloc in 2000.

Opinel Number 12 folder
I use it for everything, from cutting outdoors to cutting meat at a restaurant, where it usually gets an admiring reaction. The simple and secure lock mechanism is excellent. The steel and the temper are just exactly right; it stays sharp for a good long time, and is easy and quick to sharpen when it needs it. It's a utility knife raised to the highest standard, and it's ridiculously inexpensive. The definition of a pocket knife. As you can see, I'm a fan of these knives; I own about six or eight of them. I started carrying Opinel knives about forty years ago when I was working as a carpenter. I changed from a Swiss Army Knife. I could cut drywall with it (ouch), hit it with a steel the next morning, and it was ready to go again. I prefer the carbon steel to the stainless, but I prefer carbon steel period. Well cared for, it's a lot prettier. You do need to keep the lock clean and lightly lubricated. I don't particularly like the handle shape, but I usually reshape it.

Big folder a delight to use.
I wish I'd gotten one of these a long time ago. This extra large folder works wonderfully on bread, melons, larger cuts of meat, anything I would use a chefs knife on. I've put this knife in the picnic/camp box where it will get a lot of use. The big handle gives me plenty to hold, and the high carbon blade is sharp and easy to keep that way. The blade lock is foolproof, and because it folds up the edge is protected and your fingers are too. I don't know of any folder this large, this well made, and this inexpensive.

Built very well. You'll break the blade before the hinge will give. Be aware this knife is HUGE! I'm looking for a sheath that will fit and until then it rides in my back pocket beside my wallet in my Wranglers. I can cut re-enforced chem hoses loose at work with one try thanks to the length of the blade; no sawing! Kudos for the quick shipping time too!
