QAQTR8: QTR-8 John Quayle "Higgins" III
QTRM5TR Knives
Affectionately known as “Higgins” the straight-shooter, no-nonsense. Ever. QTRM5TR used a frame lock design on this model, but due to the length of the blade & lock-tang, they placed an overlay piece on the lock side. This block functions similar to a ‘doorstop’ preventing overextension of the lockbar and adds a bit of grippability to the frame side. No matter how much outward force is applied, because of our “rogue block” the lock may never be rendered ‘over-extended’ and ineffective. The blade is an American-style tanto with a finger-guard that sees double duty as a flipper device. Finally when the knife is open, it reveals its symmetry and has ideal 4-corner lashing points using the hollowed chain ring bolts at the base of the handle and the through-holes at the base of the blade. A true tactical tool: hard, fast, sharp, ready for the world and more.

About the ORB® Pivot System:

The ORB® Pivot System is a sealed ball-bearing technology that is widely considered the second generation of an open-bearing system that is being used by some manufacturers today.

The ORB’s advantages are plenty: dirt and pocket lint cannot impede the track of these rollers, they’re encased. The ball-bearing system tightens the tolerances in and around the pivot of the folding knife, as a result the lock-up is vault tight, yet the rollers allow for almost effortless rotation.

The lack of ‘play’ at any point on the rotational axis of the blade is truly unlike anything currently being made at this price point in the United States.

About the Tri-Spoke Pivot Assembly:

A single thread weaves its way through every corner of the knife industry: the desire to be original. To author some form, to create something unique and memorable lives at the desk of every designer throughout our profession.

QTRM5TR's signature, at the present point on their timeline is the Tri-Spoke Pivot® Assembly. At the heart of the Tri-Spoke Pivot assembly is the T10 Torx slot, but the science around the perimeter is what’s most interesting. By engineering their own unique hardware and implementing the component as an oversized pivot, they allow our folding knives to distribute the force of assembly over a larger area, allowing the knife to pivot at the same speed throughout its smooth rotation. The results are stunning to say the least.

Awesome knife for those born with two thumbs!
It seems sturdy enough. A little rough around the edges. By far the coolest feature of this knife is the double thumbstuds! I was born with a rare genetic defect and I have two thumbs on my right hand. Finally! A knife with two thumbstuds for people that share my handicap! Blade centering is a bit off and it is very heavy, but it is the only knife I can open with my thumbs. THUMBS UP!

Blade play
I have a large knife collection and honestly, quality-wise, I would place this knife below many of the larger knife manufacturer's Chinese-made offerings. Spyderco and Kershaw both produce Chinese made knives that make this one a little rough. The design is nice and it seems very solid at first, but after flipping it for a couple of days I noticed some side-to-side blade play. I backed out the pivot, applied blue loc-tite, and slowly screwed it back in, checking for stiffness in the action as well as blade play. To eliminate the blade play I had to tighten the pivot to the point where it would no longer flip. I have never had a $100+ knife do this to me. I've contacted Quartermaster about a replacement or repair and they seem willing to help but seem to be very evasive in their e-mails. I have never had to endure so much hassle just to get warranty service done to a knife. So, in short - cool design, awesome initial quality, questionable longevity and customer service. I don't think I can recommend Quartermaster knives to anyone. Stick with established names and save yourself the headache.
