Leather Sheath
Leather Sheath
Leather is known for its durability and traditional appeal. When compared to kydex it is preferred for its silence when bumped against other objects, as well as blade retention.
1095 Carbon Steel
1095 Carbon Steel
An excellent hard use steel, 1095 is a primary choice for camping and larger fixed blade knives for it's extreme toughness and ability to hold an edge. Corrosion resistance is very limited with this steel, most blades come with a coating to prevent premature rusting.

Cons: Sheath/Scabbard, None
Excellent skinning knife.
I just skinned a large 10 point buck using this knife and a much more expensive S30V steel skinning knife. S30V is considered to be the best knife steel available today. This 1095 Murphy knife did just as good as the S30V knife. I switched back and forth between knives. For under $40 you can't do better than a good Murphy skinning knife.

A Great Bushcraft Knife!
The R. Murphy skinning knife is a big knife, disguised as a medium knife! The handle enables you to hold this knife in many different ways and it gives you a lot of control over the blade. I gave the scales a quick sanding, to smoothen up the edges. The grind is kind of a scandi-grind with a secondary bevel. The spine is just over 2 mm. These things ad up to a very efficient and yet sturdy cutter. The blade comes reasonably sharp, and it is 1095 carbon steel, so it will be easy to sharpen. The sheath is a scandi/bushcraft-sheath and is well made. The finish on my knife though, is not fantastic. The tip of the knife has a small imperfection and there is a little space between the wooden scales and the tang. I read a lot about some peoples opinion, that american knives should be made in America. Well, that's fine, but then these finish issues, should be adressed, if you hope to have returning customers. For the money though, this is well worth it, especially since there are not many knives out there, quite like this one. Great service from Knifecenter and iGlobal.
