RPDPHSX020: DPx HEST II Assault, Exclusive Orange Paracord Wrapped Handle
DPx Gear
The craftsmen at LionSTEEL in Maniago, Northern Italy, manufacture the DPx H•E•S•T™ II Assault fixed blade knife. This knife is the Italian-made answer to the original DPx H•E•S•T and features various enhancements to the original configuration, including Niolox steel, a revised pry bar angle and a slightly modified hollow handle. The blade of your knife has been either stone washed Woodsman or Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN) PVD coated Assault.

The DPx Gear Hostile Environment Survival Tool (HEST) II is a short run, high endversion of the DPX HEST Original. The HEST II is made with Niolox steel which delivers a harder, more granular cutting edge without the chipping or problems normally associated with very hard tool steels. The HEST II comes in a black G10 scaled, PVD coated tactical version for law enforcement and military or an "old school" naked stone washed blade and natural matching Brazilian Santos wood scales. These models come with 500 paracord wrapped handles but also include the textured black G10 scales, making this knife exactly the same as the Assault II model. The scales on the HEST II are thick providing more storage area and a meatier grip. We created a beautiful matching sheath in either cordura tactical or hand made leather.

Because we see this a "ranch carry" or military product we changed the pry bar to accommodate gloves by softening the angle. We also eliminated one hole to make the prybar stronger. There is also a handy hex driver.

Designed by adventurer Robert Young Pelton and handmade by LionSTEEL in Northern Italy, the HEST II is an upgraded version of the knife that changed the way adventurers think about brutal-use knives.

The 3.15" (80mm) blade of the HEST II is made of Niolox tool steel with a 61 Rockwell hardness. The HEST Original had a Rockwell hardness of 57-58.

Because the knife is tool steel, and not stainless steel, it is easier to sharpen but may oxidize if not properly cared for. Rust only affects the appearance of the knife and not the performance. Like all DPx Gear knives, we ask that you use a whetstone or diamond sharpener to dress the edge, and NEVER use a motorized grinder.

The blade is 0.187" (4.8mm) thick and features three sizes of wire strippers and a pry notch. There's a hex driver at the hilt and a wire breaker at the base of the blade. We removed a lashing point in the pommel because we found it unnecessary, and we changed the pry bar angle to better fit the size of the knife.

The HEST II comes with an additional hollow handle designed for storing survival materials like fire starter or water-purification tablets. The scales are attached with two slotted/Allen screws.

The HEST II is available in two versions: Woodsman and Assault.

The Woodsman is a perfect size and balance for use as a skinning knife and camp tool. The handle is scaled in natural, mirror matched, Brazilian Santos hardwood and the blade is stonewashed to a soft glow. The Woodsman weighs 5.2oz and comes with an Italian leather, hand sewn.oil-tanned sheath.

The Assault is a take-to-the-fight, low-profile duty knife. The handle is American G10 scales and features a PVD black-coated blade that reduces the visible signature to nearly zero. The Assault weighs 5.4 oz and comes with a black Cordura sheath with a sleeve for a sharpening rod or fire starter.

DPx Gear knives are guaranteed against manufacturer defects for the life of the purchaser. DPx Gear reserves the right to repair or replace a knife under warranty at DPx Gear's discretion.

Outstanding fixed blade package.
Knifecenter's special on this knife is as inexpensive as you'll find this knife. I was foolish not to jump on this earlier. Don't like the orange paracord? It comes with the exact same G10 scales & hardware as the standard HEST 2 Assault. This entire package is better than I imagined. I don't know why I waited so long to check out Dpx gear knives. On a purely visual note, dpx has some of the coolest packaging of any knife line. Most of us are going to toss (ok, recycle) the box, but from a marketing POV, they do a very visually pleasing job. Even if this knife came in a heat sealed plastic bag, the way ESEE packages their fixed blades, it'd still be worth every penny (ESEE fixed blades are 100% worth the cost as well IMO). Just saying, it's nice to open a quality knife that is presented & packaged as nicely as Dpx sends out their stuff. The knife, being the important part, is everything that Dpx says it is. The sheath is surprisingly well made. I'd rather have kydex & equip it with a Tek-Lock, but hey, this sheath works, & it's well made & secure. The retention of the plastic liner is good, & the velcro over closure is good. The sheath retention actually improves once you fasten on the G10 scales, because of the handle thickness, the knife fits more snugly with the handles on. It took me literally 2 minutes to strip off the cordage & install the included scales. It functions fine & looks great with the cord (yes, it's real milspec 550 cord), but the handle slabs really fill your hand & provide a comfortable grip. The blade steel is premium quality, & the fit & finish are nicely executed. I have owned other Lionsteel-made stuff, & the dpx line is absolutely up to the Lionsteel standard. I can't wait for the weather to improve so i can go out & beat on this thing. If KC's pricing stays the same, I'm strongly considering ordering another one on payday.

extremely well crafted, built to last forever!
I haven't put it to serious use yet, but when you see how much research and work went into designing the knife, you know DPx makes knives that will survive the toughest tests.
