Description
SCHSAT: Extreme Survival Viper Side Opening Assist, Plain Satin Tanto
Schrade

Schrade brand knives have so many models - but they are cleverly designed, well made and really economical. These assisted side openers are super fast and well made. They have a safety on the top and action that takes a little getting used to, but they are truly unlike any other knives on the market. The Viper Assist model is no exception. It's got a 3.2" tanto style blade, textured aluminum handles, black pocket clip, and a locking safety mechanism.

Great Carry Knife
Some things you should know; I haven't carried a knife in several years, so I was skeptical to get such a radically different knife than what I had carried in the past (typical fold open, clip on, lock blade). You should also know that although this knife and it's grip looks to be made of plastic or some kind of resin, it's extremely tough material. From a safety aspect; I got this knife because of it being unique in the way it opened, but was worried about the safety of carrying it in my pocket, and using it. 1. The pin that keeps the blade shut when not in use is amazingly sturdy, and will NOT be accidentally disengaged. The lock requires more pressure to unlock than your standard firearm by almost threefold. 2. Carrying it in your pocket with the lock disengaged. (Note that this is never a good idea for obvious safety reasons) Even if you were to carry this with the locking pin disengaged, the way it fits into the grip, and the way it must be opened means it's extremely unlikely that you could get yourself into a position where it would open on it's own in your pocket. 3. Removal for use; This knife is genius (and that's saying a lot from what I remember of my Schrade Old Timer), the way the handle is made and the way the blade is mounted, you MUST (no other option) pinch the blade and the clip to remove from your pocket; ensuring it will NOT open as you remove it (which I've experienced problems with in the past with assisted open knives). 4. The way this knife opens is unlike any other that I've used. I like it in that if (on the off-chance) you disengage the blade lock, and the knife were to close; it's very unlikely that you would be harmed or cut by it closing as you would in a typical knife. [see 'cons' section for more detailed explanation] I don't use it a lot by any means, I just like to carry one on me because if I ever needed to use it for something, I'd have one on me. I've always preferred the Tanto styled blades because you get a nice lengthy blade to do heavy work with, you have the shorter blade for some nice controlled cutting, but you also have a 'second point'; the corner/angle where the two parts of the blade meet to cut into boxes without harming the package inside. This knife is wonderful. For a long while I lost my faith in Schrade with all of the changes they'd made, but this knife has most certainly restored my faith in them. The blade has ZERO wiggle, the lock is almost too hard to disengage (not inconvenient, but enough to make you feel safe because it won't disengage in your pocket or accidentally) and the quality of the steel used in the blades hasn't changed; It's still the same awesome quality I remember. As far as it looking good, well that's obvious. However, I highly recommend the stone wash finish over the polished or black powder coat. For someone who hasn't used or sharpened knives in years, the stone wash easily covers up any 'whoopsies' moments in your sharpening, and any wear that typically comes with using a knife. Now for the negatives... I'm likely not 'qualified' in the amount I use knives to accurately judge downsides to one; but the handle feels far lighter than I would have imagined (not in a cheap way but it does make you realize you're holding a unique knife different in balance than any other you've used). I also wish the release on the blade lock (not the safety lock that prevents accidental opening, but the one that locks the blade in the outward position) weren't positioned right where my thumb wants to rest, so you have to be cautious when using it not to accidentally disengage that and close the knife. And lastly; For me this isn't a problem as I have many different type of driving bits to use (such as torx). The screws on this knife that hold it together are of nice quality, but it's an odd bit size (I can't find one to fit it in my small collection). But you can tell that you dont risk stripping them out as there is plenty of room on the edge of the screw between the thread and edge. Overall; Great knife, great brand that's definitely worth giving another shot if you left them, and amazing service from Knife Center. This was my first time ordering from them and I am very impressed. You can call and speak with an actual person; and they seem to be very popular. Keep up the great work, guys and girls at Knife Center; y'all rock!! Travis R. Dallas, TX
