SP110GPBL: C110GPBL Lava Blue G10 Sprint Run
During work hours Chad Los Banos is a Corrections Officer on Hawaii’s Big Island. On his free time he is a hobbyist who practices martial arts and collects knives. In both his job and on his free time he handles knives, lots of them in all shapes and sizes. This motivated him to develop his own knife design he calls the Lava.

The Lava’s form follows function approach piqued Spyderco’s interest and a collaborative knife design was the result. The Spyderco/Los Banos Lava has a long curving handle paired with a short blade. The blade’s cutting edge drops downward creating a negative blade angle, a positive feature when holding the knife. The negative angle positions the blade’s cutting edge lower than the user’s index finger so the wrist is in alignment. When the blade and wrist align, you can cut longer with less fatigue and better leverage.

Chad’s design philosophy was not to force the hand to fit the knife, but have the knife conform to the hand-any sized hand be it large or small. He kept the blade under two inches and Spyderco manufactures it in VG-10 stainless steel, PlainEdged and flat-ground. The stainless steel handle curves ergonomically with a cutaway finger choil, pronounced enough to seriously wrap a hand around and solidly grip. A backlock with a Boye safety dent, locks the blade open and a steel pocket clip positions the (closed) knife, tip facing upward, in the pocket.

Sprint Runs

Pros: Overall Quality, Blade Sharpness, Handle Feel, Weight, Blade Material, None
Cons: Pocket Clip
Great little knife
The smallest useful knife I've ever had. The handle is comfortable and functional, beautifully finished, and the blade is just big enough to manage most day to day jobs. It's been a great knife for city use - clearly not a weapon but comfortable and effective in hand. My only gripe is that the clip is over built and so thick that it really presses into the G10 which makes clipping to the pocket difficult and abrasive. I'll probably have to sand down the handle under the clip.

Amazing folder
This knife definitely exceeded my expectations, although a little smaller than I wanted. Aside from that, the build quality is incredible. It's easily sturdier than my Paramilitary 2, which is a solid knife. The ergonomics are the best I've seen in a knife. The blade shape is perfect for small utilitarian tasks. Nothing that needs a longer blade. But my uses rarely call for the larger knives I used to carry. All in all, this is a master piece that I will never get get rid of. My only gripe would be as it is a sprint run, it's more expensive than it would be otherwise and I find myself babying it. For now, anyway. Not docking a star for that though.

Cons: Lock Ease of Use, None
Solid Little knife
The lava is a great edition to my collection, goes well with my Sage 3. No shortage of character, it's curves makes for a very comfortable grip with a very solid feel. The only gripe I have with this knife is it is really stiff right out of the box. I loosened the the screw to make it easier to open but it is still tough for one hand closing. Overall a really awesome looking knife. I would love to have one of these with a little longer blade, I would definitely use it as my edc.
