SP123CFP: Sage - Carbon Fiber Handle

A Sage is someone wise in judgment and experience. It’s reasonable assuming they achieved that title through trial, error and extending their best effort at every opportunity. If that definition can be applied to something tangible it would be an item created from experience and striving for quality and performance at the highest level. If said item were a pocketknife we could call it a Sage.

The C123 Sage represents Spyderco’s 30-year pledge to knife crafting and learning to make better knives at every available opportunity. The plan is to offer an ongoing series of Sage Folders with many of the different and ingenuous locking devices and mechanisms the knife industry has to offer.

This model is in recognition of knifemaker Michael Walker’s contribution to the knife industry with his creation of the LinerLock® and ball bearing detent method of locking open a folding knife. It pairs together a drop-point shaped CPM-S30V blade with a twill-woven carbon fiber handle and LinerLock. Categorized as a mid-sized folder, the blade is flat-ground and PlainEdged. Designed for comfort and in-the-hand-ergonomics, the carbon fiber handle is vibrant with multi-colored fibers bonded together when manufacturing the carbon fiber. The weaving runs deep, making ridges and textures for the palm to adhere to while gripping and cutting. A silhouette wire pocket clip adjusts for left- or right-hand carry.

Eye candy mostly
This clip on it is very weak and unreliable. Also, the liner lock (the liner it's self) is very thin. I wouldn't trust it for anything more than opening an envelope. I'm not a fanboy of any knife maker. I just tell it like it is.

Pros: Overall Quality, Handle Material, Weight, Blade Material
Cons: Pocket Clip, None
wanted a small sebenza but couldn't justify the cost. i chose this knife because of it's design and use of carbon fiber (light weight important). had it now for few weeks and i am impressed with the tight lock-up and quality of the blade. people have raved about the clip design but i am not so keen on it. though it has strong tension and sits low in the pocket when i hold the knife in my hand it doesn't feel great against my palm...i guess i could always remove the clip altogether. i had initial concerns about the strength of the blade given the big hole bored into the top of it but am ok with it now. i do agree with other reviews that the inner edge of the circle is quite sharp so i have taken it down a bit using some ultra fine sandpaper and mineral oil. at the end of the day, i would purchase another spyderco.

juuuuuuuusssssssttttt about perfect
ok, i love this knife! i have been carrying it everyday for the past year or so, and i absolutely love it! the carbon fiber actually provides a pretty good grip (at least what you would need for an edc/ lightweight utility or emergency defensive knife), and the carbon fiber looks awesome. s30v steel is great, I oviously cant complain about it, and the blade shape is the classic spyderco leaf shape(which i think is perfect.) i also love the deployment on this knife compared to my older tenacious, which opened decently, but with the sage it opens as quick as flicking it with a thumbstud! the pocket clip is also great, but that is the reason i rated this knife juuuusst about perfect. the idea behind having the thin wire clip is great(it honestly looks like you are carrying a pen in your pocket instead of a knife), but spyderco could have made it a little higher up on the handle so the knife doesnt stick out of your pocket at all. Im sure a lot of people wouldnt care about that, but its just my personal opinion. also, i noticed after carrying this knife for a while, there was a couple times that i hit my waist on a wall or the corner of a chair or desk etc, and I hit the pocket clip of the knife against it, which made it slightly move out of place. this wasnt a big deal as i just took the knife out of my pocket and pushed it back into place with my finger, but that isnt something that should occur with a regular pocket clip such as the older spyderco, bechmade, or ontario clips. dont let that stop you from buying this knife though, because almost everything about this knife is perfect and i havent had a single problem with it besides being stupid(myself being stupid that is, and knocking the clip against a wall corner or whatever and not paying attention to it.) and knocking the pocket clip out of place. this freaking knife and you will not be dissapointed!
