SP144GP: Caly 3.5

Spyderco has several knife designs that remain steadfast year after year. What keeps people buying them over decades is their basic function but also that they’re upgraded or refreshed with new technology and materials when they become available. A prolific design in Spyderco’s line is the Calypso.

Its arrival over a decade ago as a mid-sized folder has spurned numerous variations and converted legions of knife buyers to the benefits of flat-ground, thick leaf-shaped blades. This is a workingman’s or woman’s folder founded on the premise that a comfortable, usable pocketknife is one that feels like a natural extension of your hand.

A larger, newer Bionic version of the original Calypso Jr. is the Caly3.5. The latest Calypso progeny has a three and a half inch VG-10 leaf-shaped blade that is thick at the tang, then tapering to a tip. The cutting edge is flat-ground and thin for precision and receptive cutting. Ergonomics and control were taken into the designs’ consideration and where handle and blade meet is a substantial finger choil. This is the spot where the index finger settles ergonomically leading the thumb to naturally position itself directly above on the blade’s spine. Also the spine is textured with slip resistant jimping making the knife feels like part of the hand with no sliding forward or backward while cutting. The black G-10 handle has a mid-positioned back lock and a low profile wire clip, holding the folder deeply in a pocket facing tip-up.

Cons: None
Hard to beat
I think this may be the best EDC on the market for many people. I believe there is too much emphasis in many knives on being able to hack through car doors and not enough on cutting performance. Not so with this knife. I upgraded to the 3.5 from the caly 3 and find that it fits my hand better, but both are exceptional knives. I use this at work to open packages, cut rope and slice snacks. I've never had to cut open a car door. If I have heavy work to do in the yard or I am bushcrafting, hunting etc, I bring another knife, but this one is in my pocket 95 percent of the time. It is feather light, non threatening, the flat grind is a work of art and slices far better than any benchmade, zt, or sog I own. The ergonomics are fantastic and the willow leaf blade shape is very useful. The zdp is the hardest stuff I have run across and takes a terrifyingly sharpe edge. Easy ambidextrous opening. All and all, just outstanding. I have probably spent several thousand dollars trying to find an EDC I like more than this thing and I can't do it.

This is my go to EDC
I've had this knife for several years now and it goes everywhere with me. It's a great everyday tool. I love the relatively large blade; yet it still fits comfortably in my pocket. Other than some minor wear around the edges of the handle it's held up very well over the years of use.
