SP178GP: C178GP Kiwi 4
Ahhhh… love that new Spyderco smell! One of the things that makes Spyderco so much fun to carry and collect is that they evolve their patterns over the years instead of just replacing them. Say hello to the 4th generation Kiwi!
The Kiwi has long been one of Spyderco’s most popular and enduring designs, but its latest incarnation takes this practical tool to new heights. The Kiwi 4 is upsized to fit larger hands and it features textured black G-10 scales that complement its unique double finger choil to provide a superbly secure grip. The VG-10 stainless steel blade’s full-flat grind produces incredible edge geometry for friction-free cutting, while its sturdy back lock mechanism, full liners, and solid stainless steel back spacer command ample strength. A reversible deep-pocket wire clip offers low-profile tip-up carry on either side of the body.

Better than expected
I was expecting a larger version of my previous Kiwi, and that is what I got. However, what I did not fully expect was that the modest increase in size would provide not only a much more ergonomic and usable Kiwi, but one which was almost as light as my smaller one. I don't know how Spyderco did it, but it made a larger, more usable Kiwi at almost the same weight. Quite an achievement.

Outstanding utility folder and great upgrade to the Kiwi 3
I just got the Kiwi 4, and I have to say it is (almost) everything I was hoping for. I carried the Kiwi 3 for a year or so as a more utilitarian, people-friendly companion to my Esee Izula 2 which I EDC everyday. And while I like the Kiwi 3, the Kiwi 4 improves upon the design in many ways, including the following: - The Kiwi 4 has locking mechanism, the tried and true lockback, while the Kiwi 3 is slip-joint. While the lockback is not my favorite lock, it is great on the Kiwi 4 as it keeps the profile very slim. As an added bonus, you can open the Kiwi 4 one-handed with the Spydie Hole, while the Kiwi 3 is way too stiff to be opened with one hand. - The G-10 handle scales on the Kiwi 4 are a big improvement over the old stainless steel Kiwi 3 models. They provide excellent traction and make the Kiwi 4 about the same weight as the Kiwi 3, even though it is bigger (approximately 1/2 inch longer blade length and 1/2 inch longer closed length). - The Kiwi 4 has my favorite clip, the Spyderco wire clip, while the Kiwi 3 is clip-less. It rides deep in the pocket, and I prefer to have a clip on my knife. - The steel has has been upgraded from 8cr13mov to VG-10, which in my opinion is one of the better blade steels commonly available. Fairly easy to sharpen, holds a good edge, and is pretty corrosion resistant. So overall the Kiwi 4 is a pretty nice package. It is a very slim, unobtrusive knife that still feels very nice and solid in your hands thanks to the outstanding double choil grip, my favorite feature of this knife. The G-10 handle provides excellent traction, while the VG-10 wharncliffe blade is perfect for lighter duty EDC tasks like opening packages and mail, cutting zip ties, whittling, and food preparation. All that being said, I do have some minor gripes. For one, the tip on the Kiwi 4 is not as sharp and acute as the one on the Kiwi 3. While this will make the tip stronger, the needle-like tip of the Kiwi 3 is gone. Also, I feel for a smaller knife, the price is high. Sure it has good steel and the G-10 handles, but why should a knife this size be about the same price as the Paramilitary 2? And like I said previously, the lockback is not my favorite locking mechanism as it is hand to close one-handed, but it keeps the knife slim and can be closed one handed with a little extra fine motor skill. So if are like me and want a bigger, better Kiwi 3, or you are simply looking for a good, small utility blade and you got the money, get one of these. You will not be disappointed.
