Pros: Effectiveness, Overall Quality, Ease of Use
My most-used sharpening tool
I bought a second set of these for use with a mounting block I made that sets them at a finer angle than the standard Sharpmaker, optimized for delicate slicing tasks in the kitchen. These fine-grit rods strike a great balance between giving an edge a nice degree of polish, while still removing enough metal to sharpen efficiently. They work well as the final step in the sharpening process for anyone who isn't fanatical enough to routinely strop their knives, or for a quick tune-up in place of a traditional steel for a knife that's still fairly sharp. I use them with all my knives, typically after getting them close to sharp with either a handheld diamond tool or a large bench stone. They're even gentle enough that they work well dry with a very hard Japanese blade that chips when used with coarser stones.
