SP28SYL2: C28SYL2 Dragonfly2 Salt SpyderEdge

Spyderco’s group of water-friendly folders and fixed blades collectively make up the Spyderco Salt Series Line. Salt Series knives have H-1 blades. H-1 is a nitrogen-based blade alloy rather than carbon-based. The elimination of carbon in the steel renders it one-hundred percent rust proof and just like its carbon-steel cousins, H-1 hones to a hard sharpened cutting edge that earns high marks for edge retention. The Spyderco Dragony2 is just recently being offered with an H-1 blade option, called the Dragony2 Salt. What makes the Dragony a bestseller is its mid-sized blade, ergonomic handle with a front-finger choil and a spine cusp. Its blade-to-handle geometry and leveraging points ll a gripping hand, making it feel like you're cutting with a much larger large knife. Its FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handle is molded with a grip pattern called Bi-Directional Texturing that ergonomically fills the hand with a series of angles and leveraging spots and is available in Marine Yellow. The addition of textured jimping on the choil, spine and screw-together handle construction and a left/right tip-up wire clip make pocket carry effortless and convenient. Hollow-ground for high cutting performance, the blade comes in a PlainEdge or SpyderEdge configuration. Precise positioning of the enlarged Spyderco Round Opening Hole in relation to the pivot makes opening/closing the folder smooth.

EDC Near-Perfection
I bought this knife for the steel, so I'll start there. The material is excellent. I had heard H-1 was nearly rust-proof, but I did't realize just how rust-proof until I carried it in my swimsuit on a three-day trip to a seaside condo. Hours of exposure to seawater and chlorine had no effect that I could see. The steel also holds a great edge. I've had it for about three months now, and it's only just starting to need touching up. The serrations are great. I've gone through more cardboard boxes than I can remember, and the blade chews through half-inch nylon rope like a chainsaw, something I've never seen before in a knife this small. It's not completely perfect, though. The blade picks up fingerprints, and they leave a slight discoloration until you wash it off with water. Not really sure what that's all about. On to the handle. The yellow FRN has an aggressive texturing that provides an excellent grip, and the bright color makes it easy to find if you put it down somewhere, but by the same token it picks up dark dirt easily and has to be cleaned with a toothbrush on occasion. The handles are ridiculously light, which is a plus for carry but not for people who like to have a nice 'weighty' feeling in their knives. The clip is my favorite out of any knife I've ever used. It holds the knife in place but won't tear up a pocket because it touches the handle at the flat oval with the Spyderco logo on it. The knife can be carried almost anywhere; the light weight, small size, and rust-resistant blade means it can be carried while exercising without fear of interfering with movement or rusting from sweat. It can be clipped to the inside of an undergarment if concealability is a concern, but the texture on the handle will be slightly uncomfortable on the skin before you get used to it. Bottom line, the knife is great. I'd only give it a nine out of ten, but that won't stop me from giving it five out of five.
