Pros: Overall Quality, Handle Feel, Weight, Blade Material, None
Cons: Lock Ease of Use, Pocket Clip
A nice piece for the price.
I just received this knife from knifecenter a few days ago and overall I am fairly happy. I don't have any specific purpose for it other then as a collector piece and occasional EDC knife. I own scores of tactical knives and this is my first 511 piece. I like their tactical nylon gear, for the price it is very well-made, so I thought I would take a chance while knifecenter had 511 gear on sale over the Thanksgiving holiday.I used to study a Filipino martial arts and I can definitely see how this would appeal to folks who study martial arts or need a blade for self-defense. It looks great and S30V steel for the blade is fantastic. It is more than sharp enough out of the box but it won't fling hair the way some more high polished edges do. Some people may choose to touch up the edge on a fine ceramic rod before carrying it but it it is absolutely sharper than many knives out of the box still & definitely cuts aggressively. Very very sharp just not razor sharp. Overall the basic construction & build is sort of close to a Spyderco Endura, (FRN handles, sandwich style construction), though i was surprised to see that there are no steel liners in the handle slabs, just the fiberglass reinforced nylon. The handle material is very thick and rigid and feels extremely durable. The knife is also reinforced by full metal throughout the ring portion of the handle & the back lock. Overall this is a very well constructed piece. I like the fact that despite the unusual shspe, the knife rides very light in the pocket. It seems unanimous from most reviews that yes indeed the action is extremely stiff. The pivot comes lightly greased and the lockback mechanism is generously oiled, and previous experience with this type of knife usually indicates that it will break in nicely and smoothly. As a fan also of cold steel knives, this type of stiff back lock mechanism does not bother me. I'm actually very happy with this knife. It does come with a torx wrench and extra screws which is a nice touch that manufacturers rarely include. Included extras in the box always raise the value of a new knife for me.My only real complaint is that one of the clip screws was backed out a few milimeters as if maybe at the manufacturing plant someone forgot to tighten it down all the way, no big deal at all. The clip screws are nice & long, & a drop of blue threadlocker like Loc-Tite will ensure those screws never back out.Shipping from knife center to the northwest coast here was incredibly fast. I have been a customer since 1999 and I am a customer for life. Based on my experience with this knife I would probably order another 511 knife in the future.
